I went back and played it again after talking to you about it last night. I got into the mechanics a bit and had some fun trying to maintain links. It was a little enjoyable, but there's still something missing.

Played through Gears of War act 1 and 2. The stuttering isn't bad at all once I fiddled with the video settings and closed down some background applications.

I can come pretty close on normal mode, generally faltering on the last stage. ; But I've played Perfect Cherry Blossom so much, and the Touhou SHMUPs are similar enough at their cores that I never really spent the amount of time getting to know Imperishable Night that I did Cherry Blossom. Someday, maybe, when I'm no longer so Touhou'd out. Although I think I like Cherry Blossom better anyway. The soundtrack appeals to me more, and the patterns tend to be a bit more loose and quick-moving. I don't have the nerve and sleight of hand required for some of IN's bullet labyrinths. Or maybe I just need more practice...

I'm currently playing Star Ocean: First Departure. It's just Star Ocean 1 in Star Ocean 2's clothes, down to its carbon copy menu and occasionally rehashed sprites. But that's fine by me. I thought that the battle system to the first Star Ocean was so atrocious that I couldn't even make myself play it beyond the first six or seven hours. ; And I had so much fun with the second game that I'm quite happy to play with its mechanics for another thirty hours. I'm more or less at the point where I abandoned the SNES one now, so I'm looking forward to what's still to come.

It was quite terrible, IMO. =/

Still playing Landstalker. Stopped for a while, but I should finish it sooner or later.

Ara? What was? First Departure? Or Star Ocean's battle system? If the former, then...I don't know. I like it so far. It's been long enough since I played Star Ocean 2 that the rehash-yness doesn't really bother me. I'm having fun. It's not quite grabbing me in the way that SO2 did, but none of the game mechanics are especially new to me at this point, so...

If the latter, um...yes. ; I don't know. I can appreciate that it was treading new ground, and that it was pretty unique at the time, but it really hasn't aged well. Like...at all. ;__; Even the SNES version of Tales of Phantasia aged better, and that feels pretty damn clunky itself these days. Maybe I'm just spoiled by the newer Tales games.

    Also, Landstalker.

The SNES Star Ocean. I tried playing it a few times, but... Eh, maybe it would have been nice a few years ago, like you said.

Makes me wanna replay Dark Savior.
