The only way to make that comparison relevant would be to work for a place in which your boss can arbitrarily decide not to pay you for a day's wages. Then going to work would be as much of a gamble as what you're doing, and the comparison would have stronger legs.
Really though, working, knowing that at the end of the week I'll have X amount of dollars, and that the only thing keeping me from making the same amount from week to week is me simply not going in, is a whole lot more comforting a prospect than trying to make my livelihood from something that's about as sure a thing as getting struck by lightning.
