Does HDLoader need any mods to the ps2 to work ?

I recently heard of HD loader and was wondering if it needs any else to work, I heard that you may need a flip top but have also heard that you only need the official disc itself

I believe all you need is the network adapter, HDD, and HDloader installed onto that hard drive.

edit: I think you install HDloader with an exploit, with a cheat disc. Or something. I am probably 100% wrong.
