I think that if a person is raised in the north, particularly in a major city, that certain states/areas can and do become like the parodies we have all seen, at least in the mind's eye.
(We actually live far, far from home at the time, and I regularly get things like: "NEW YORK CITY?!? WOW...hey...do you know a guy named Paul that lives there?" LOL! and the classic: "I heard that New York is nuthin but homos, ni**ers, and jews...'zat TRUE??" ...sad, sad creatures I have ran into..hehehe...)
I think that much of Europe and the rest of the world views Americans in the same way that NYers and Californians view the south/midwest/'middle America'....make sense, or?
