One of the things i wonder about, is if i set this up can i still scan the XP installation with my anti-virus? When i was skimming the page on it, it mentioned that the virtual XP would still be getting updates, and therefore potentially viruses etc.

Install an antivirus program to the virtual xp, you can still go online with it hence you getting updates or you can just disable the internet on the virtual machine and do without the internet on it
