Both are, the extention just depends on the device they got dumped with

sfc is more commonly used though but smc usually works just the same with 90% of snes emulators and snes rom readers

Whoa no FIG love? Anyway the main difference between SMC and SFC is just the extension part which for the most part is meaningless, but different headers types might cause some issues with different emulators though.

SFC is the 'proper' SNES ROM extension according to Byuu who is a much bigger expert on this than any of us. SMC was a dumped file from a particular brand of copier (Super Magic Card), and somehow that extension became the default for just about all SNES ROMs regardless of how they were dumped. Renaming the file to SFC is all that needs to be done for BSNES compatability.

I personal have batch changed everyone of my roms to SFC, and they all work with ZSNES, Snes9x, BSNES.

Thanks and what about the Genesis/Mega Drive roms? I saw some files with the extension md and some bin files.

bin or smd either work again depends on the dumper this one is more mixed some emulators work only with bin others work only with smd

bin is the most used format though by emulators

*.md are usually just bin files
