I am currently going through my games on my xbox (I recently got a new HDD for it)

I may be looking into making patches for the problem games but first I need to know what issues are caused

General Notes = dvd2xbox can be used with Quix FTP'd Game install's, but for long file name issue you must use the file name expected by the acl file (Quix will not let you FTP long file names without you first renaming them), I will take notes on those though

Long File Name Notes = The Xbox HDD format only supports up to 42 characters per file name including the files extension

P.S. I am doing this between playing PSO that I will be cracking a bit more at a later date to fix issues with EP2 quests in my quest packs

P.P.S. anyone is welcome to post any known issue games from HDD, also note that not having enough free space for games and having 255 folders inside the udata folder will prevent new games from working, please make sure that is not the issue first

does it also edit the main xbe file to take into account for the file name changes as well or does it just rename the files?

EDIT:-

Toca Racing 2 or 3 are good ones to test with as they crash from boot if they are not fixed, lots of others with this issue let you play the game still so you don't know if there is an issue until it crashes later in the game

The Auto FATX limiter option in XBMC does not in any way fix the Long File Name issue, it does just rename the long file names but because the long file names are still linked in the default.xbe, you might as well just delete the the renamed files as it has the same effect, the default.xbe will not see the files, so you will get a crash or dirty disc error when the default.xbe calls for the files

I use XBMC anyway but I did turn off the auto FATX limiter as it doesn't do you any favors unless it's something like MP3's or other none game data

I turned the option on for a quick test though just to verify this though with Toca Racing 2.

There are not many games with this issue though that is why I am taking notes on those that do , but in the end XBMC does not fix anything, it just renamed the files to 42 characters, that alone is no help at all.

Found a fix for Xbox Music Mixer, but I will just make a patch files for this, I will do the same for the other games as well (Not that this is a game)

Also got The Sims 2 fixed, that does work on some dashboards but not all, a simple Hex fix makes this work just fine on them all

Again the Long File Name issue can not be fixed by just renaming files, the only xbox software that fixes this is dvd2xbox but this does not do this automatically and only a small number of games are fixed for that issue, this only works because the main default.xbe is also fixed to read the new file names, though I will try and make it so dvd2xbox is no longer needed

P.S. if anyone needs any of the fixes before I officially get round to this just make a request in this thread I'm sure I could summon up a quick xbe patch file, I will possibly just use the old ips format commonly used for roms like NES to SNES and Mastersystem to Genesis

I have not included xbox 1.6 issues with scrambled images, these can be fixed by disabling 480p for all scrambled image issues or for most you can alos use an alt loader like Complex Tools or Evox

I should be able to get most fixed at the moment I am still taking notes on what games need to be looked at, that is a lot of boot testing

Once I have my notes done I will go back and create fixes

I will also be avoiding formatting E: drive anyway because of the xbox's 255 save limit that once reached prevents any other new games running, to avoid this I am removing saves as I go

Instructions... for 480p fixes / Black screen on load fixes / Dirty Disc Error fixes :-

HDD users
Extract the fix
FTP the default.xbe over the original xbe

DVD-R users (480p only as others are targeted at HDD installs only)
Extract the ISO with Qwix
Extract the fix
Copy the default.xbe over the original xbe
Re-build the ISO with Qwix

Instructions... for Icon fixes

Extract the fix
FTP the default.tbn file to main folder of the game (the folder with default.xbe stored in it)

Instructions... for the Long File Name fixes

Extract the ISO with Qwix
Extract the fix
Copy both the default.xbe and Filenames.bat to the main folder you just extracted the ISO to (the folder containing default.xbe)
You want to copy over the original default xbe so hit ok when asked
run the Filenames.bat file to rename all the long file names for you (depending on the game this might be a lot of files)
Create a new ISO with Qwix
FTP the new ISO with Qwix to your Xbox
The Notes.txt file just tells you what files get renamed

For FTP use with Qwix and other notes

I do recommend using Avalaunch even if you do not use it as a Dashboard
I don't use Avalaunch as a dash myself I use XBMC instead but have Avalaunch installed as an App
I also have a shortcut made on my E drive in Apps/XBMC that points to my F drive Dashboard/default.xbe that is the folder I use for my dash
The above lets you boot directly from Avalaunch back into your dashboard of choice

I don't recommend you FTP full games via Filezilla or other free FTP tools as these tend to mess up, it is safer to make an ISO and ftp via the ISO and let Qwix do it's thing, though Filezilla thinks everything went fine some files can become corrupt, this is still ok to use for small upload lists, for example I have never had problems uploading and downloading my PSO modded files or any of the fixed up xbe files, but often when you upload a folder that is full of the data from a single game it can become corrupt with ease, I had that problem with the entire contents of PSO when I just wanted a duplicated copy of the game, that I attempted several times with filezilla and failed on all counts, I went back to using Qwix and this worked with all 4 copies I uploaded (4 because I have a copy for each of the mod packs)

If for some reason you can't use Qwix then C-Xbox Tool is a good alternative

The following fixes have been created (Not yet released though) they are sat on one of my external HDD's

This has the full range of fixes
Long File Name Fixes (HDD issue fixes, these can prevent a game starting or can crash the game at a later stage)
Icon Fixes (HDD & DVD issue fixes, I don't think this would bother DVD users as much, but some games don't show an icon in custom dashboards)
Dirty Disc Error Fixes/Black Screen Fixes (HDD issue fixes, stuck on a black screen or a report that the disc may be damaged or dirty)
480p Fixes (HDD & DVD issue fixes, these games normally only support 480i)

P.S. these fixes are aimed at Hard Drive installed games, not DVD burned games, the only fixes that are for DVD as well as Hard Drive are the 480p fixes that only work for those with HD cables (Component HD (Console set to NTSC) & VGA users (Console must be modded for VGA use, VGA is not an officially supported HD display type))

a couple of files need fixing the main xbe and the driving xbe if I remember correctly

To extract the attached use 7-zip

2 files are there to replace the original files

default.xbe and driving.xbe

as I have not had a proper look at this game yet I have not patched 480p display yet for HD users, this just fixes the Black Screen on load and several other problem load points later on for HDD users

P.S. done the 480p fix for the game as well, but you only see an effect with that if you use HD display via Component or VGA

I am still very much working on these
I have taken a small time out to work on PSO for the xbox for a little bit while I download a couple of games I am missing, just PAL-E games at the moment to fill in the gaps
I have, otherwise got the initial testing is just about complete, as for patching, there are a couple of games I will go back to, a couple of long file name ones that I need to look at closer and a couple of 480i games that would not patch to 480p with the common methods

Again if any of the fixed games are wanted I can upload the fixed files on request or if there is a game you want me to check sooner rather than later I can do that as well.

Once I am done I will release them all together in single thread

I will list each game individually
I will index this and multi index it so I have a A to Z list of everything, also lists of certain types of fixes as well
I will also do packs of HD Fixes (should work both from DVD/CD and HDD) & HDD Fixes (Only for HDD users [Start up fixes for Black Screens and Dirty Disc Errors, Long File Name fixes and Icon Fixes])
