    Have you read the sticky?

If not, please do. Then you if have any specific questions you can ask. But what you want to know is already explained in detail there.

For real hardware you use, ESR/FreeMcBoot (Softmod) [DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD DL-R & DVD DL+R only] or Swap Magic Discs [CD-R, DVD-R & DVD+R only] (A kind of soft mod, swap swap magic disc for burned discs) or Mod chip [CD-R, DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD DL-R & DVD DL+R] (A hard mod)

DL = dual layer media also known as DVD9 I would also recommend you look for DVD5 kits for those as most PS2 hardware will struggle to read that format
For ESR most CD media games can be converted to DVD media, some however can not, of the softmod methods ESR is the most reliable and works directly with burned games

those are the 3 main ways to play backups

You can also play via HDD (bulky models only) USB (HDD or memorystick) or Network, you can do those with the help of a softmod FreeMcBoot and the required loaders

Note:- Not all models of the PS2 can have FreeMcBoot installed onto a PS2 Memcard (the very last model of the slims can not have this installed, it's the model that is half shiny and half matt the older slims only have a shiny strip left to the drive lid, the rest of the console top plat is matt) you should still be able to use Swap Magic though that you must buy a burned copy will never work on it's own, but there is a method if you own a game that you can make a backup of and replace a PS2 exec with the swap magic exec file (also known as a elf file) this method however fails most the time, you are best off just buying the disc set, that can be used to run the related progs to run from HDD/USB/Network as well as run direct from DVD-/+R and CD-R

For more info on real console hardware you want to be in our other section Everything Console

P.S. if you plan to use the ESR method you do need to patch the games before burning
