Not really you will loose out on new features, the updates don't just block flash kits, while you are on older versions of the firmware you are also blocked from the eShop and possibly other things

Indeedy shortly after it was blocked the last time it was let known that a simple flash kit firmware update would not work as the hardware itself was blocked

Not sure why the above I quoted even mentioned the Acekard2i

P.S. Verified that the Supercard DSTWO still works fine without re-flashing the DSTWO firmware, I wanted to wait for the official site of the Supercard DSTWO to update there info first before going ahead and testing, as it happens my girlfriend had updated my old 3DS anyway... doh. Hopefully she will not next time.

we can't even fully dump 3DS games yet never mind play them

DSi carts still have not been dumpped fully either

P.S. if you own a R4i kit that looks like it is listed above but it does not work, this is just because there are too many clones now to keep a real track of, before updating your 3DS make sure the official site for your kit says it will run on the new firmware before you update your 3DS
