I think you have to install v1.4.3 with the DS or DSL before you can use it on the DSi. Not 100 percent sure but that's what I herd.

As above update the flash kit via a friends DS or DS Lite

In general I would update your flash kit before updating the DSi never after, though you may need to wait it out a bit before you can update the flash kit, depends when they do compat updates to fix the flash kit on newer versions of the DSi
