The DRM is unquestionably atrocious. I could hold a rant worth several dozen pages if I got up to steam, touching on companies like EA, UbiSoft, and others. While I don't agree with using it as a cheap excuse, I definitely feel that DRM only works to make piracy WORSE in most cases.
Yeah, I can't think of a single way DRM would have a legitimate negative effect on piracy. At the very worst, it's going to delay the release of a hacked version of the game. Pirates are still going to get the game, and they're still going to have an easier time playing it than paying customers. Personally, I'm waiting to see how long it takes for always-online DRM to appear on consoles if it hasn't already.
