Anything i need to know before i buy an original xbox?

Well, im running out of games to play on my ps2 and gamecube and want to buy an xbox original. i want to mod it, hopefully soft mod seeing as im strapped for cash and dont want to buy a modchip. i just knew that the newer ps2 slims that came out ( the silver ones ) are un-moddable and just wanted to make sure what version or anything i should get before i buy one. also, is the homebrew scene for these things still going? oh and which would be cheaper in the end, using a hard drive to play games or having to buy DVD-9? I just read about xbox's v1.6 not being able to be chipped. As for soft mod and how to tell the versions, I have no clue.
I am also interested in some replies since my bro just picked up a xbox1.

And Xbox Live is not useable on an original XBOX anymore. It was shut down early this year or last year, but it was pretty recently shut down.

ok well theres one that i'm looking at that says that its modded with XMBC. what is that? i googled but i'm still confused oh and i did read that other thread but i still need to know how to tell the version. thanks

It's very skinnable though so can take on many looks

I install everything on the internal HDD, but the Standard HDD is apx only 10GB, so unless you are installing one game at a time via ethernet then you can either get a new IDE HDD modded and installed or you can just burn everything, I recomend the HDD mod though unless it already has a large HDD in it, mine is only about 120GB I think

that is this years releases so far with more to come,i always all post all the new emu/homebrew releases for xbox here.

all emulators on xbox play in 720phd if you have the correct component cables.

So, lets say i bought a 1.4 xbox. what softmod is most reccomended, and how would i do it? link to an up to date guide Please? and at this point im going to be using dvd's instead of a hard drive for full games.oh and what would i need to do for PAL and other region games? would i need to patch them before i burn, get a special launcher, again i'm strapped for cash so i dont want to get cables or anything for my tv. thanks for all your answers so far.

Your best option is going to be the softmod through Splinter Cell/Mech Assault or Agent Under Fire. Requires the original game for XBOX, can only be the normal version, not classics or a re-release.

You need a way to get the files from your PC onto your XBOX, whether it be with an XBOX memory card or whatever...

Burning games is just that, burn them to a DVD+R (most XBOXs won't read CD-R), and put it in and it'll play. There is no PAL/NTSC issues.

Where did you read that?
I've got a v1.6b right here that has a DUOX 2 LITE modchip.

There are two methods to identify your Xbox version:
1. opening up the console and identifying visually by parts types (very accurate).
2. by serial number (not 100% accurate).
