Default do special edition games have specific discs

i have been told that collectors editions of games (such as MVC3 or Perfect Dark Zero) have alternate discs than regular copies, namely that they have a different number somewhere, if so where? and are there more differences?

It's rare have special edition games that have different contents on the disc (I can't think of any that do off the top of my head). Differences in the stock numbers are quite common, and it's common to have different disc art. I don't know any particulars about the games you mentioned, but take a look at the two NTSC-U FF12 releases:

*PSA* Wii Redump collector's can now unscrub ISO files. So scrubbed games can now be verified. You can find the program to do this here

Some games do, some don't. It's usually games that unlock DLC on the Special Edition versions that have different discs, though some just like to slap a new picture on the front of it to make you feel special for paying more. Like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, the Hardened Edition had a different look on the front of the disc than the regular edition.

i mostly want to know because my copy of CE Perfect dark zero is defective, and i want to know if i should waste money on a refurb or buy a regular copy for $3 and switch the disc,

i was told that a number written on the disc somewhere was different

Perfect Dark Zero is fucking shit, however the only difference with the LE and standard versions is the bonus disc.

Number difference? As I said the game disc is just the same as any other copy, therefore will have the same "serial number" as the standard copy.

Not necessarily. The part numbers may be different because one is a special edition, and one is an initial release. I don't think it's true 100% of the time, but it can happen. For example, the Platinum edition of Final Fantasy 7 has different part numbers on the discs.

360 discs don't even have printed serial numbers on them. Maybe there's something on the underside that's relevant, but I've never really noticed. Both Perfect Dark discs look identical at a glance:

If you're buying a replacement copy, it should be obvious, but don't get the platinum hits disc. It has a grey stripe near the middle saying "platinum hits"

    /doesn't own a 360
/doesn't know what he's talking about
    /shutting his mouth now

It's more of a personal preference for me. Even if the discs have absolutely no difference between them at all, I like to have the one that actually belongs with the copy that I own.

It varies per collector's edition, I think. WoW's collector's editions are basically the same disc, but that's because you get the content through your CD-key, which are specifically CE keys. In other cases, such as my Heroes V CE, the disc had a different print, though I'm not sure if the "unique CE-only hero trail" is part of the disc or installed with the updates
