How to disable Tails in Sonic the Hedgehog 2

I recently downloaded the Sonic the Hedgehog 2 emulator and even when I play 1 player, it still has Tails tagging along with Sonic. It is irritating especially in the bonus rounds because I cannot control Tails and he bumps into the bombs of bonus rounds, causing him to lose power rings. How do you disable this annoyance?

....tails is PART OF THE CHALLENGE, do u want to make the game easier? cheat. otherwise ur stuck with the little yellow furball

There is a option mode in the game.
Press three times down in the main menu to find it.
Then select Sonic alone.
Then press start.

It is too bad that your advice came so late because I gave up on the 6th bonus round because it was very frustrating trying to dodge the mines and get more rings because of my inability to control Tails. So I gave up on the bonus rounds and beat the game without the power of Super Sonic. The trick to do this without the near invincible power of Super Sonic is quite simple: right before every tough obstacle I save the state of the game and reload the state every time the obstacle kills Sonic so that no extra lives are wasted. On tough boss fights, I save the game state after every hit successfully delivered so that in case Sonic dies, the battle does not need to be repeated from the beginning. With this, I beat the game in an hour and with no deaths, rings, and force shields lost in any of the stages.
