What's the name of the game?
    A. Sonic CD

    Which version of GENS?

Have you tried Kega Fusion? (which is slightly better than GENS):

This is not a version issue and the same need to be done in both emulators

P.S. Fusion is what I would go for now aswell, overall it has over taken Gens

Anyway to solve this little problem you need to format your memory.

When you boot up Sonic CD or any other CD or CD-32X game you will be sent to the CD Bios Press Start screen. Don't Press Start, press A, B or C instead to be taken to a screen that includes a memory option from that option you can format your memory

P.S. we do have a guide for doing this here that includes a few other options that help Sega CD run smoothly, the guide was originally just for Gens but most of it covers the Fusion emulator aswell, you may also need to rename some files for the sound tracks to work, info on that is also in the ikle guide

Sorry, I misread the OP's post.
All I can say, is that I'm in the middle of transferring & installing everything on my new XP machine, so I'm kind of distracted--and will be for some time to come probably.

After years of using Win98SE, I gotta learn all about XP now.

Welcome to the 21st century SegNin. (finally)

For the sound to work, the mp3's have to be properly named.

    If the first file is:
    Sonic CD.iso

Then all the mp3's have to be named:
    Sonic CD 02.mp3
    Sonic Cd 03.mp3
    Sonic Cd 04.mp3
    etc.
