It does save money just using the keys/tape/glue instead of buying a second lid for the slim though and it's good to have as much information as possible beforehand so don't think your info is not needed

Err guys... what's wrong with just cleaning the lens? Get a lens cleaning CD, they usually give you a small cleaning liquid with it and the CD has a little brush. Let it spin for a while and see if it works.
Anyway, lots of PS2's get this problem, and you will probably end up opening it to check the lens tracks (lens probably tilts a bit, I telly ou it'S very common on older PS2) which is still less expensive than a new slim line PS2 and the stuff needed to play your backups...
I dunno, but you guys quickly jumped to buying a new PS2 when the solution might be as easy as opening the PS2 and turning a cog.

I'm not sure I know how to fix the lens. I went to my local EB and asked them if they could do it, and apparently it costs just as much as a new system in order for them to fix the lens for me.

And judging from what people have said, there really is no "safe" method of playing burned games?

Well, it really isnt all that hard. There's literally TONS of tutorials on the net on how to adjust/clean/replace your lens.
Since you said it still reads original, it can't be that bad.
Here's a tutorial in the bunch
