Basically a boot disk will boot your backups allowing you to play them in a non-modded console, hence the name . In order to make this work its necessay to have the real thing, I mean, no boot disk will work if it's not original, so the backup of a boot disk will not work unless your console is modded, in which case, why will you need the boot disk?
Very easy to use, just insert the disk in the console, it will run and will tell you to insert the backup.

Well there's nothing like that for Xbox as far as I know, if you want to play backups without a chip you'll have to go with a softmod, explained here http://forums.emuparadise.org/showthread.php?t=28072
As for the PS2, you'll find boot disks to boot PSX games (google for Breaker Pro), but If you want to play PS2 games you'll have to go with this http://forums.emuparadise.org/showthread.php?t=30516 or the swap method, in which case you'll need to buy Swap Magic+Slide card or flip top (for the PS2) or Swap Magic+Magic Keys (for the slimeline PSTwo).

I forgot to say, Swap Magic wont boot DVD9 games, only DVD5. There are not many DVD9 (GT4, God of War, 50cents, Champions of Norrath 1 & 2, Kessen III, XenoSaga, Genji...), make a search in google for a complete list.

Hey, what about Dreamcast boot discs? Do I have to buy those? Also, do they work with consoles that were made past Oct 2000?

If the console is PAL it will run backups, including backups from boot discs, no matter the date.
If it's american I guess you'll have to mod it to run backups (for consoles made after that date), you'd need the bootdisc to run non-selfboot games. Utopia boot disc is free, there are other boot discs like DC-X, but those are import players.

Alright, thanks. Come to think of it, I was able to find a Utopia Boot Disc for download from Megagames, explaining the free thing. But one more thing- do you know where I can find an NTSC DC made before Oct 2000 besides eBay (I can't be sure what the date on the eBay ones are, as few auctioneers take photos of the underbelly of their console). or a PAL DC, either one works.

And, my apologies for hijacking this thread.

You know you can just ask the seller or even beter ask them to send you a webcam or digicam shot of the underside

Your best bet and will prolly be able to pick one up for less is a 2nd hand store

I beleive Utopia would be no help for the newer NTSC consoles, specially as it was never on GD-Rom format

Yeah eBay is your best option, cant really tell you any other way. MasJ recently bought a nice DC that will run backups.. and it was even white! :O

And dont worry about hijacking the thread, it was about boot disks after all

Damn, wish I knew a store that had a DC. Although If I knew of one, I'd have one for sure by now. EB doesn't carry them, nor does Gamestop. And I haven't seen any second hand stores around. But Cookie Monster, I think I will ask around the sellers for pictures. Thanks.

EDIT: Hey, what do you know? I found an eBay store that sells modded DC's, for a fairly cheap price.
