Question How do you save games on emulators?

i am curious. i have a snes emulator and when i hit save, a new i con appears where i start my games. i try to play the emulator with that icon, but it just comes up with a black screen on the emulator and some words at the bottom of the screen, and one says "chkm: fail" i don't know if something is wrong, but my configuration can load fine. i have no save files when i play the game after i save though. I made sure it wasnt set read-only, and im not sure how to save. please help.

You can either save like you normally would on the actual console or you can either press esc then click on GAMES then Save State, and Open State to restore or you can setup shortcut keys through the MISC drop down menu in Game Keys

The default save state keys in ZSNES are F2 to save and F4 to load.

You need to load the game first then try to load a state, if you are doing this and still no save states are available to load I'm not sure why it would do this

What version are you using? WIP versions are Work In Progress and are not necessarily stable.
You didn't happen to extract a different or newer version of ZSNES in the same folder as an old one did you? That can cause similar problems to yours because the old ini file is still left over. If you did just delete your old ini and it should work if that's the case.
