Default Best method to mod PS2?!

    Hello!
I want to mod one of my PS2's (i've got 1 Slim and 1 Fat) to play .iso
Which is the Best-Method to do that? (I mean Softmod no Chip or anything...)
From early days i have a Swapmagic v3.6 DVD but only the DVD's.
Is there a chance for my to mod the PS2?!

    thanks for your help!

    greetings

The soft mod only allows for DVD's anyway

The best method still runs DVD-/+R's best media is +R though for the PS2 Slim and -R for the fat unless you change the book type from +R to DVD-Ram I think it was (something you can do with ImgBurn)

Other methods boot from USB that is just far too slow to even bother with and Network loading from say your PC via a crossover ethernet cable or via a router (router method may be slower if part of the connection is via Wi-Fi)

The best HDD method would be for the older bulky PS2 if you have the network adaptor plus an IDE HDD, but USB is not a viable option as it is USB 1.1 that is just slow

If you want to go for a mod Swap Magic DVD has it's uses still

http://www.epforums.org/showthread.php?80570 I wrote that guide ages ago, it includes ESR

once you get that you can try whatever method you want after all you need is OPL for most other methods, it Supports HDD USB (Not recommended at all) and Network loading

for ESR though you can convert PS2 CD's to DVD but this does not work with all games, off the top of my head Quake III just can't be converted at all to CD, all attempts I have done with that game result in it not getting past the QIII logo that normally has the loading progress bar.

Also if you remove the lid blocks after installing the mod ESR, it will boot ESR patched backups without the need for the lid blocks, that is ideal for multi disc games or the Half Life 2 mod that was part of a Demo Disc

I know you will want to know, but what the ESR patch does is change the second descriptor for the game to act as a DVD-Video, so the PS2 see's the disc as a DVD-Video disc instead of a Data/Game Disc (None of this Please insert a Playstation Compatible disc error message thing), then the ESR software on the Memcard will look at the fake DVD-Video disc and access the real data on the disc and boot it, there will still be the very odd game that has issues, Wolfenstein has issues but I do believe that is some sort of copy protection and causes funky sounds and is not any kind of lag issue, that could of been fixed if it was

SATA drives work apparently, but you need an IDE/SATA adapter. There's obviously no space for such an adapter, but you can toss in a tiny laptop drive. Rigging something like that up would certainly be easier than finding a reliable IDE HDD nowadays.
*PSA* Wii Redump collector's can now unscrub ISO files. So scrubbed games can now be verified. You can find the program to do this here

Thank you guys for the answers!
The Method with a burned DVD is OK. I don't think i need an HDD because i only want to backup my Retail-DVDs because theyre old in these Days and i don't trust them to run in 5-10 Years...

    Exclamation

the method i used to ping/MOD my ps2, was the 'hddadvance' way. (alternate method of ps2 softmod, all parts required, NO disassembly on your part required, for chunky/hdd compatible ps2's.)
then the next mod, was the FHDB route, never looked back.
if you're not interested in a harddisk, there's this vid for a slim, but the above posts DID explain themselves, at least it look it from my end.

ALSO, there's a james bond 007 game can be used for the hack. (agent under fire i think)
and, goto sksapss and psxscene for source advice.
freemcboot is one way, this way since you're not arsed about an internal harddisk.

OP has Swap Magic so that game is not required to mod the PS2 it makes the process go so much easier. My guide should do the trick on it's own including Codebreaker support FMCB and ESR, the other loaders can be accessed via FMCB if wanted and easy enough to setup if needs be.
