Default Having trouble getting Snes95x emulator to map Select on controller

Hello, I am very new to emulators & game roms on a pc. Was able to load the Snes9x emulator and the Super Mario Bros ROM from this site. Went through the emulator input configuration with the USB controller pressing all keys and saving the config. ROM starts and looks great. We can get to the choice for 1 user and unable to select that option even though we thought we correctly mapped the Select button in sw to the USB controller. The controller is shaped kinda round on each side with Up/Down/Left/RIght, then Select and Start in middle, and X Y A B on right.

    Press Start
If I remember Select is used to change what is selected/highlighted, Start is used to Start what is selected

Ran the ROM and emulator again. My friend says it's the B button that once we choose type of game (Single) we're supposed to click on the B button and nothing happens. We did map it under Joypad 2 in the emulator.
