Missing one or more required ROM or CHD images: Vs. Super Mario Bros. (set SM4-4 E)

I'm trying to load Vs. Super Mario Bros. (set SM4-4 E) using sdlmame v0.169 on linux. I have ~/.mame/roms/mario.zip fine, but the emulator complains that it is, "missing one or more required ROM or CHD images." Any help is appreciated.

mario.zip is the original Mario Bros. you know the none super game, none scrolling just a single screen and a pow box or two

VS. Super Mario Bros. rom is suprmrio.zip

you just have the wrong rom
