Yes, really. Those world maps you're all so fond of typically only give you 1-2 areas to go to at a time. FFX? More or less a huge hallway itself. FFIX has massive mountains blocking you off and huge plains filled with NOTHING, creating an incredibly linear experience. By the time you can freely roam around it's pointless to do so. FFVIII? Much the same case as IX. They even removed your ability to travel outside the current linear chunk of gameplay several times (Esthar comes to mind). FFVII? Midgar is linear, the map is just a straight line between towns. The towns are all along a straight path. And so forth. FFVI? Limited world map (you can remove it entirely from a huge chunk of the game without affecting anything). FFV doesn't get off either, and when we come to FFIV, well wouldya look at that, the map is separated into little chunks of town/dungeon, just like all the later ones. And so forth.
BUT WAIT, YOU GET AIRSHIPS AND VEHICLES AND ALL THAT.
Well, no. They're usually useless and horribly nerfed until the third act where they become sidequest tools. Or, in other words pretty much the exact structure FFXIII follows.
Also, the storyline. It happens when it happens. You have zero control 99.9% of the time. And typically limited control the remaining 0.1%.
FF was always linear. Choice was simply an illusion.
Gare has never played Xenogears. :wacko:Quote:

Yes, I realise I never finished the game, but I was in the final dungeon, where I was already PAST the free-roaming. (Yes, I realise I could've gone back to the free-roaming parts, but I felt a total urge of not at all :P)
EDIT: Yes, I know that it's a gamespot review. I also know gamespot's reputation. I just wanted to type a counterpoint to the ridiculously high grades the game kept getting, no matter how futile. The review itself is pretty good, in my opinion :P
Also, to drag it back on-topic: Pokémon was mentioned earlier, and I'm inclined to agree massively there. Yeah, it started out as a minor franchise, but it's been a bloody huge cash-cow for quite a while, and only now it's dying down a bit. They're just recycling the old game with new pokémon now, at least that's what it feels like to me. If people like it, yay them, but I'm sorta over it :P
hehe, points well made. maybe i was rash to judge :) lol
and i agree about pokemon too, played most of the one's on the GB/GBA, even gave a few on the DS a look, but felt its just the same game with diff monsters, as you said.
TBH, i feel the same way about the Tekken series. I think it peaked at 3.
Id vote for World of Warcraft....Its not a bad game, but god, people would sell their soul if they needed to play the game....Everytime they announce an expansion, you see WoW ads everywhere, people dont stop talking about it and shit.... Just imagine how fun would be to pull the plug of the WoW servers lol.... we'll see a world scale mass suicide xD
Also, gotta say God of War... I like the game....but seriously, why every freakin hack n slash game must be compared and considered a GoW ripoff? If every H&S game is a ripoff of GoW, then games like CoD, BF, MoH and stuffs are all ripoffs of Wolfenstein and Doom, cause they are all FPS.... It doesnt make any sence...
Ah yeh, about the Pokemon one....make a 1 game with all locations, gyms, leagues and pokemons, where you can actually have all of the pokemons and stuffs
Heavy Rain. Overrated mostly by the game creator himself. David Cage does not know what "humble" means. At all.
But in general, I couldn't stand the game. I was decently excited about its release and even picked it up at midnight when the stores were unpacking it. Very disappointed.
Briefly: Atmosphere was fucking fantastic once you got into the main storyline, and the high-adrenaline parts were a blast, but that story... Oh man, that story. I almost died falling into some of those plotholes. May not have helped that I have degrees in criminal psychology and creative writing (WORTHLESS FOR REAL JOBS  ). There was little-to-no plausibility for many of the events.
And it took me less than two days to beat. Waste of 60 bucks. :low:
Hate to break it to you, but calling those games FPS only became popular in the late 90's early 00's. Before then? We called 'em "Doom Clones"
(Also, "call of duty clone" DOES get used frequently.)
I hate to break it to you, but you completely missed the point of his character. He even addressed this himself at one point. His development is more about understanding why he's the way he is, rather than having him change. Development/growth does not necessarily equal change.Quote:
Snow is the most horribly stereotypical gung ho tough guy I've seen in ages, and though he's faced with many 'horrible tragedies', his character remains as flat as it starts out
Probably explains some of the X-2 and XII hate. The only FFs that manage some nonlinearity (X-2 even had nonlinear plot!)Quote:

Well, there were only two, but that was a lot of difference compared to other FF's, there was a lot of choice about what point you were going to go next, and so on.
/rant
Fer, nobody remembers that because the majority of people turned the game off after the intro.
Oh I picked up on that. Problem is, even though he addresses his problem, it doesn't change that he's the most horribly stereotypical gung ho tough guy I've seen in ages. Him being the way he is and not changing, sure. That doesn't change the fact that he's a horribly written annoying character :P
