I don't care if a story seems weird, because when I first got the VGA version of Quest for Glory 2 I had no idea what happened before then, but I managed to figure some things out. For the record, I bought it through the Xbox Live site (Games for Windows), and I can view the CD Key. It's not returned as invalid, it just says my key cannot be used to register Mass Effect 2.
