Haha no, I just dream vividly myself and used to have a lot of research time on my hands, and I get interested in how the mind works.
Inception was right in that you should develop a check throughout the day - not to be sure you're not dreaming while you're awake, but so that when you ARE dreaming, you do the check out of habit and realize you're not awake.
As far as manipulating what you dream about, that's actually the harder part because once you realize you're dreaming, you're more likely to wake yourself up. But do things like, say what you want to dream about aloud before sleeping, write down what you want to dream about, visualize things, etc. I haven't looked into it in a long time, but much of it is kind of like reverse stress - the more you think about something, the more your subconscious will keep thinking about it. It's why you have nightmares about things when you're overly worried about something in waking life.
Edit: It's also why Inferno's waking up after twenty minutes to check how long he's been sleeping. He's too worried about it ^^;;;
