For a European, at least, as we have badass passports that let us travel anywhere in Europe without restrictions. One of my Chinese friends here wants to take Japanese citizenship, though, both because she loves it here and simply because she says it grants many more advantages than a Chinese passport, which still isn't viewed very favourably by many countries. I don't think my Uncle is going to bother with citizenship, even though he's married and living there.
Giving up your country of birth is a bit too much for some people.

I've thought about becoming either a Canadian or European citizen. I'm still debating it.

I think Britain is actually quite tough on people trying to become citizens. Becoming a resident of the country is easy, but actually taking citizenship is surprisingly difficult here.

Like Elin said, citizenship of a euro country is pretty good.
If you're born in the US I assume there would be plenty of euro countries that allow dual anyway.
Australians (born here) have been allowed to have dual citizenship for around 10 years iirc.

Possibly. I've looked into it, and it doesn't seem much more difficult than here.

I would consider it if I had been here for more than about eight years, had a family with a Japanese man, had a good career, owned a house and generally had no intention of ever leaving the country outside of holidays. As is, though, I think I probably like foreign languages and foreign countries a little too much to ever settle down in one place for that long.

Most countries in Western Europe do. Some of the Eastern block are, I think, a little more conservative and require you to give up your birth nationality.

It's probably a bit different for him though.
He's Irish, has family in several different countries, and leaves Japan quite a few times every year.
Better off keeping what he has always had, there haven't been any issues.

I don't know. Canada seems more likely than Europe. If it was Europe, it would be Italy or France possibly England.

Canada is part of the commonwealth, so I assume that would make things a little easier for other commonwealth countries and GB.

Likewise, really. Like I said earlier, a European passport is very useful and I'd be reluctant to give it up for that reason, but that aside, I don't have any particular attachment to my nationality. I like certain things about Scotland, and I'm glad I was born there ahead of places more dangerous or unpleasant, but I've never identified particularly strongly as "Scottish" or even "British". I've always just felt like a person more than any specific nationality. I'd happily take most any nationality if it were more convenient than my European nationality for the life I wanted to lead.

I have a friend from Canada, I'm thinking about visiting her and seeing what Canada's about.
