I'll give Square props for experimenting, but I definitely do not feel that they got it right there. Perhaps it's because I have different standards in games than younger players, or perhaps I'm just too critical. But I don't like the characters, the story-telling method, the battle system, and frankly, the music didn't do much for me. That leaves the graphics, which I will happily admit were fabulous. :P
Still, who knows, perhaps their next game will turn out to be the next FF7, if you will. (Not fanboying, just noting the sheer impact that one had. Perhaps they can repeat that.) All I know is that they have to come up with something bloody impressive to make me buy it. Twelve bored me - yes, it was huge, but at the same time remarkably limited to one thing: Battles. All the quests involve battles or solving a puzzle to reach a harder battle. Thirteen had this problem even worse, as far as I'm concerned. :P Fourteen was an astonishing embarassment, though I don't know how much has changed since the horror that was its release, so I won't comment there. I will say this though: If XV comes out sometime next year, I'll certainly have a look around several reviews and videos to see how it looks. I still want to like the series. It's just suffered a few dents. :P
Plus, if they do release on a yearly basis as they've always done, one might surmise that XV will be developed by a different team altogether, possibly pleasing those that hated XIII. Time, as ever, will tell. :)
