Years ago there was something even more wacky than that here.
If you wanted to be an Australian citizen you had to renounce previous citizenship :ugh:
Thankfully that's changed now :]

Christmas Island detention centre is more than 200 over capacity after more than 1000 asylum seekers arrived in the past two months.
As the Immigration Department activated its contingency plans to deal with the overcrowding, two detainees were being treated for potentially deadly typhoid fever.
One of the asylum seekers has been flown to mainland Australia while a second is in isolation on the island.
I should probably get in bed. I have 2 days worth of work to do tomorrow.

There's always something going on somewhere.
For the Tamils it's the stuff that happened a while ago in Sri Lanka I guess........plenty of other people come here because of apparent persecution due to ethnicity (minority).
They come here 'cos they're convinced by people smugglers that getting here by boat is easy (well, it is as long as the boat doesn't sink and they aren't intercepted).
But Australia is probably a safe place to go to for many reasons, and the economy is still pretty good atm.
Apparently the two typhoid cases are Indonesian boatmen.
