I've had the same 360 and PS3s, no trouble aside from when I bought them (360 was rrod, the BC ps3 had the disc drive mis-aligned or some shit) both were cheap fixes.

The SNES isn't really a fair comparison being that there's less moving parts and no laser to wear out, but ditto on the older disc-based consoles tending to be more reliable thing. I still have a Saturn made in 1996 that works perfectly, while my two year old PS3 now refuses to read half my discs. This despite the fact that I have played my Saturn for hundreds of hours more, used the swap trick on it dozens of times, and played mostly backups burned to really crappy low grade media.

Then again, considering every Sony console I have ever had except my PSP has died on me, I'm beginning to think Sony as a company just hate me. :'D

Of course, it also helps that Saturns used CDs while PS3s use Blu-Ray. When you reduce the target from 500 nm to 100 nm and make variable depth resolution important to permit multi-layer discs, things understandably tend to get more finicky about accuracy. Such is the endless march of progress, I suppose.

Yeah, I kind of figured as much, but "half my discs" sadly includes the couple of audio CDs I also tested when it refused to read the game I was playing. So I'm inclined to say it's less a problem of technology and more one of my having... extremely rotten luck. :'D

Oh well I'm happy with what I got, really excited for Borderlands 2.

So I signed up for Playstation Plus the other day when I heard that they were going to be adding a lot more full-length retail titles as free downloads.

Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light
Hard Corps: Uprising

And yesterday I grabbed:

I think the $50 I paid for my one year subscription to PS+ just paid off.

Free games for signing up to a console service? Never heard of that before. Thats a good reason to consider getting a PS3 instead of a new Xbox 360

EDIT: Bought WWE Crush Hour. Could be a laugh, but I reckon its just going to be rubbish.
