Default How do i emulate 16bit pc games?

So i've spent half the day trying to use dosbox, virtual pc, anything i could find and i'm just stumped.

Is there any user friendly emulators designed to run 16bit games without all the hassle of using dosbox? i have an iso file of Dust a tale of the wired west and i just wanna relive some of my childhood.

if anyone could help that would be great.

You should look into getting a frontend for dosbox like dbgl which is pretty good.

Also you could try running in compatibilty mode for win95 but dosbox is prolly your best bet.

Can you post specifically what problems you are running into?

Google up dbgl for dosbox. I cant do much as I'm posting from my phone right now.

Edit: actually just reread that. Have you installed the game?

Or do you need to have it mounted so the game will run becausr it checks for the cd?

Have you tried running in compatibility mode by right clicking the main executable and choosing properties to set it to win95 or 98?

I wont be at the pc until tomorrow and cant do much else unless someone else comes along to help. I'll grab the game at that time too and try it.

    DosBox Basics

e.g. if game data is stored in C:\DUST

    Mount C C:\Dust

    C:\

    CD DUST

    DUST

The above will get the game running in DosBox without a front end

P.S. what game are you talking about any, I will check it out for you and make sure it actually works.

Dust a tale of the wired west.

I have the ISO file saved to C:\oldgames

Edit: it mounts fine, but when i get to CD it says unable to change to :dust

Edit: I extracted the files to a folder, and then when i went to run dust, it said that it requires windows. do i need to install a virtual version of windows to dosbox?

Oh it's not something we have on the main site....

You want to link me up to the game via PM if you downloaded it.

I don't know if I will be able to get it working but I will be happy to give it a go for you

Doing a bit of Digging it's a Windows game not a Dos game anyway

If I'm going to test this I would be using Orical VM VirtualBox with windows XP installed to it as I also use Windows 7 64bit

I have this installing now inside the x86 emulator called Orical VM VirtualBox with Windows XP already installed

I set this up to have an empty CD Rom drive that I mounted the disc image onto once I booted XP up

In there I opened the CD Drive and set the compat via properties for both the DUSK.EXE & SETUP.EXE files to Windows 95 mode then ran DUSK.EXE and Hit Install

I done a custom install and installed everything to the default paths ect

This also crashes once installed when I try to run the game (even after setting compat mode to 95) but you may have more luck with Windows 98 that is much closer in the way it works to what XP is as I don't have my Windows 98 SE CD to hand I'm not going to be testing that.

Hah got the silly thing working

    My setup for that was

    Compatibility

    Run in Windows 95 mode

    Display
    Run in 256 Colors
    Run in 640x480
    Disable Visual Themes

    Input Settings
Turn off advances text services for this program

Ran it again and it worked
