Default R4 Card Setup Help Needed

Hi all! I just got an R4 Card for my DS. I put NESDS and some NES games on there and when I turned my DS on, it said "Menu?" and the menu won't come up. Is this because the microsd card isn't formatted properly? If so, how do I format it and what's the correct format? Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Glad to see someone else uses R4's as well. first off, what firmware do you have? second off the SD card needs to be formatted to FAT32. or atleast thats what i use with no problems. as for NESDS im not sure, i could never get it to work for me so i just played snes games using snemul instead. if you have the original firmware from the R4 main website, i dont reccomend it at all. only half the games work for me on it. i HIGHLY reccomend WoodR4. plays every game no problem for me.
    Persona is so beast...

Woody to the rescue, thats double for WoodR4

You require flash cart software first... aka the gui you should see on your DS when you boot the flash kit... yeah thats WoodR4

You may want to dig around for NesDS there are 2 versions around one will need DLDI patched to work correctly (I don't remember what version is best, it's been a number of years but there is a new update aswell to version 1.0a... this I don't get unless it just has the same name as an old one)

Edit latest version 1.0a makes sence older versions had been 0.1 ect lol

anyway the emu just works, just pop the nds file and ini into the normal folder you put your NDS files into

next pop zip compressed roms into the main folder of the micro sd

(make sure that each zip file only contains a single nes rom and no other files)

finally boot the R4 with the micro SD in it, then from the main menu pick NesDS

... now pick a rom and enjoy... p.s. Batman the video game on the NES is still one of the best batman games ever

Okay, I tried WoodR4 and it didn't work. I tried a different firmware (found via a youtube video with instructions on how to set it up) and it didn't work either, it still says "menu?" when I turn my DS on. Either I'm incredibly stupid or I'm missing something. What am I doing wrong? In the video, the guy said that his R4 Card only works with 2GB microsd cards, but the place I ordered my R4 from was selling a bundle that included a 4GB microsd card and that's what I got. Could that be it? Am I just using the wrong size microsd card?

Problem is that all R4 carts are clones nowerdays and there are tons of variations so what works on one will not always work on another, thats why I opted for an acekard 2i for my 3DS and still own a M3 Real for my DSL

Go for the official site for your cart and get the cart software from there

I used to own the original R4 myself and yes it only supported up to 2GB and I swore by it at the time, up until the original group died off and went there seperate ways

M3 had been the other top group now they seem to of dropped down the list somewhat, though my M3 Real doesn't have any issues to be honest, but I wouldn't bother for the DSi or 3DS personly now

Might be worth tring a smaller microSD maybe from your mobile phone or something

If you are buying one I recomend you do a bit of digging round to find out what is the best MicroSD/fastest you can get

e.g. I know that the kingston 1GB made in Japan ones are one of the fastest 1GB MicroSD's

The reason you want the fastest is because some games will have issues... most noticable was Castlevania Dawn of Sorrow that will crash out at poins on slower MicroSD's

If you want to try re-formatting the card try fat or fat32

Okay, I got the firmware rom the official website and it works (hooray!) but now I'm having a different problem. I put Nitrografx and some TG16 games on there. The emulator starts up fine, but when it gets to the screen where I would select a rom it freezes. Any ideas?

    DLDI patch it

You need to find the correct DLDI patcher for your flash kit.... good luck with that though

Most newer good carts auto DLDI patch, alot still don't though so you need to do this manually

My card used to give me some freezing problems with crap SD cards So I got one from my mom's cellphone it's a sandisk with 1GB but it works perfect now! Also try to format the SD with Panasonic SDFormatter V2.0

Please try and avoid posting in older threads without fully reading them

    1. re-formating has already been recomended
    2. WoodR4 has also been recomended

Just so you know, there are no propper R4 carts any more, they are all clones and not all work with Wood unfortionatly (there is more than 10 variations of the R4 now)

Not to say they are all bad, but they all have very limited support thats why homebrew groups created WoodR4 and other custom loaders
