Hi Inferno / Fumanchu / Jackhammer

I wonder if you can help me. I wasn't sure if I should start a new thread so I thought I'd add to this one seeing as it is quite recent.

About a year ago I modded my xbox & replaced the hdd with a 60gb one. I formatted the hdd with my old PC which had ide cables so it was very easy to do.
Now I want to replace the 60gb hdd for a 500gb one but my new PC only has SATA cables. Is there anyway I can format the 500gb hdd for my xbox via usb?

Yes, of course. you will have to buy yourself the USB adapter though.
What is it....FATX? i am positive the software you use to format to it has the option to browse for the drive, be it drive , E:, F: or any other.

these adapters are cheap, lets see.....here. $1.64 new.

    Thanks Jazzmarazz

I'll definitely get one of these. Are you sure that it will definitely work? Thanks again

To tell you the truth, I bought the exact one only this last week. I have yet to use it, but I don;t see what would be wrong with it.

Your PC only has SATA cables? Or SATA ports. If it only has SATA ports then you'll need a PCI RAID card with an IDE port. I'm afraid Jazz was wrong on this one, I don't think you'll be able to format a drive through USB to FATX, as all the programs are DOS based. I imagine DOS doesn't support USB?

I've never tried it, but it might be worth looking at Chimp. I don't know if it works for a bigger HDD, that's why I kept my old PC in the loft just in case I need to repair my Xbox.

Loads of guides on YouTube where people show how to hot swap- upgrade your HDD through Chimp. Typical that I'd have a 1.6 XBOX though that Chimp is more complicated to use with.

Though I can't see this working for xbox I do wonder if that kit would work with an internal HDD used on a Wii via USB

To format to WBFS? I don't see why not.
It has a power cord and adapter (if needed on those 3.5" drives) or otherwise, powers the HDD via USB.

Thats what I thought but proof is in the testing, personly I have no need or want for the cables as I don't have any sizable spare HDD's kicking about.

But as you say it should work fine.

    Hi All

Thanks everyone for your advice & input. It looks likes I'm gonna have to try to do this hot swap HDD upgrade with Chimp. How do I find out what Xbox version I have?
