Default A Question about lets play.

I have been meaning to do a lets play series of videos for a while now, as they seem to be a big part of many gaming forums (and some non gaming, something awful for example)

However, i have a small problem, in that i get bored very easily, and as such, will never get though a whole game. The only games i have ever completed, are relatively short games, or games that would be, in my opinion, Un-LP able (i played the original Civilisation till i simply could'nt anymore for example, Or Bullet storm which i Finished in a day)

But i have had an idea bouncing around for a while. I love old arcade games, I have even owned a few in my time, and still now have a mame cabient in my hallway. On that note, i was thinking of doing a series of videos in which i would put just one credit into a few random games, And see what happens. Maybe give a bit of history about the game, what im doing, funny facts about said game, or just talk about buscuits.

Is this idea appealing to anyone? i did'nt want to just jump in and do it, as im not sure if its against the rules etc, and would like some feedback on the idea.

    Cheers in advance.

Can't see why it would be a bad idea. I mean, almost any game is LPable if the commentary is entertaining enough. Giving some history, random trivia or whatever else that you can think of is a actually a good way to break an awkward silence when you have nothing else to say.

As for not being patient enough to complete longer games, I know what you mean. I did a few videos myself where I just messed around in a game for 15-20 minutes and shared my thoughts/impressions.

And no, LPing of any kind isn't against the rules, we do have a subforum dedicated to it, after all. Porn games and such are obviously not allowed, but that's kind of a given.

Thanks very much for your input.

I've recorded a few videos already, just got to find my damn XLR cable for my Microphone.

You know what, while im at it, i think i may also make a few titles with music and so forth. Make it like a proper little Show.

I actually think that that is a wicked idea, especially for those older arcade games. Yeah, it's easy to beat them if you pour a shitload of coins into them, but it's much more entertaining to watch someone who is actually half decent play through.

Obviously, something like Pac-Man might get boring really quickly, but you get my drift. Looking forward to them.

Shit. I really have to finish MM10 so I can start Silent Hill, huh...?

    I say go for it.

I have never found the time to do a full game Let's Play, playing all the way through, just mainly flash games online, but one of these days I will find the time to do a Let's Play/Walkthrough.

Im definatly not half decent. The videos will not be very long.

The first episode is just rendering out now. Comes in at just over 8 minutes, however i minute of that is an introduction.

I dont really talk about how im playing, more about the game and its history etc. I know way too many little facts about stuff that i did'nt even realise until i started waffling on in the commentary. Then added loads of randoms bits in post. Bear in mind, i am shy by nature, dont do much talking generally, and hate my own voice. but hopefully i made up for it in style.

It will be in the lets play subsection in under an hour.

I'm a bit late, but I wouldn't know about not being able to LP something. It's not like every LP needs to be video format; I actually dislike most LPs that are, and tend to actively avoid them. Games like Civ are perfect for screencap-style LPs with text commentary. I would actually do a Paradox-style interactive AAR of Europa Universalis 3 if I didn't have the attention span of a lemming on crack cocaine.

The current problem us some of us doing screenshot LPs here is that it's a lot more work than usual (not really a problem), seeing as we both have to find a host (not terribly bad) and the fact the the forum only allows 20 images per post (which is the big issue). Otherwise, I'd personally be all over the format.

Im quite the opposite, i dont like screenshot LP's, therefore, could never bring myself to make one. My main issue is that i get bored easily, so if i can just do one game, one 5-10 minute video, but make a series of them, it would be perfect. Hopefully its enjoyed by people here.

First Episode up in the lets play subsection now.

Heh, it could be worse. I would do a screenshot AAR here, but most of the AARs I myself read are narrative, not gameplay. That means, usually, that they rarely include screenshots, generally few pictures (maybe a chapter header, if that), and walls upon walls of text. One of my favourites is The Machiavellian Adventures of Princess Eleanor for the game Crusader Kings...which, come to think of it, doesn't even include the actual game at all, either. It's a hypothetical game the author came up with that could happen in the context of the game engine, but she never actually played through this scenario in the game. It's straight, undiluted historical fiction, pure and true, with no need to justify erratic game engine hiccups like the infamous "Sheikdom of Prague" that plagued early versions of Crusader Kings (irrelevant explanation below).
    Spoiler warning:
Specifically, a design flaw in how warfare was modeled, intended to allow Crusader armies to reach the Levant without fighting across all of Christiandom, also allowed the Muslim armies to reach Europe without fighting across all of Christiandom, and the AI didn't always respond to this by trying to kick them out. In practice, this led to little isolated Muslim enclaves in places like Bohemia, France, and England, surrounded by vast Christian forces that really didn't care at all that Prague, Paris, Rome, and London were in the hands of the infidel. Of course, CK had a horribly convoluted development history because of how Paradox got the project dumped on them in the first place, but still, oops.

Mind you, I'd never post a narrative AAR here, and not just because I have no talent for writing at all, nor because of my attention span. Not the least of the reasons would really be, those kinds of AARs are best if you already know the game, which wouldn't happen here with the weird games I play.
