Default Can't get PS1 emulator to work

Well when I was at my friends house earlier today and he had a PS1 emulator called pSX_1_12 which i put onto a memory stick because I've been wanting to play FF7 for a while and asked him if he knows a good site for roms so he said emuparadise.org.

Now because I'm a complete idiot I didn't ask him how to get it to work and now I can't figure it out.

First off the readme says "Extract all files from the .rar (or .tar.bz2 file under Linux) including folders." but the folder I copied wasn't a rar folder it was just a normal folder, I'm not sure if it needed to be extracted on my computer or if it was only in a .rar to make downloading simpler.

Next it says "The emulator requires a PS1 BIOS file which should be placed in the
bios directory. By default the emulator will look for scph1001.bin
    - this version is highly recommend because it is the only well tested
one although other bioses should work."

It seems that I've already got a scph1001.bin file in the bios directory so that shouldn't be a problem.

Finally it says "Once the emulator is running you can change the BIOS from the
configuration menu. In the event that you only have a different bios
file you can edit psx.ini to get the emulator running (run psx.exe
once, you will get an error message, now look for psx.ini)."

Since I have the bios they recomend this bit shouldn't be a problem unless if I'm severely misunderstanding

Uncompress the game with winrar, right click on any of the parts and 'extract here'.

In pSX go to File -> Insert CD Image -> Browse for the FF7 file (e.g. FF7.bin),

It's not compressed at the moment, it's all just in a normal folder and I can't get the emulator to work so naturally I haven't had a chance to try and play any games on it.

When I try to open the emulator it says "Failed to initialise D3D Device", then when I click ok it says "unhandled exception. Save a crash jump?"

If I click no it comes up with a report the error to microsoft thing which obviously I don't do and if i click yes it comes up with "Save a full dump? (Could be very large)" If I click yes and then accept the save then it saves a .mdmp file and if I click no it does the same.

Do you have d3dx9_26.dll in pSX's folder?

If not, get it here: http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dl...shtml?d3dx9_26
    Put it in pSX's folder.

Btw, maybe you should redownload it. The latest version (1.13)... Get it here: http://psxemulator.gazaxian.com/pSX_1_13.rar
You'll have to recopy your BIOS into the new copy, though.

I downloaded 1.13 and put d3dx9_26.dll into the same folder and tried opening psxfin.exe it but still no luck, the only difference is now I have to choose a language and then it crashes in the same way it did before.

I've also installed D3DXDLLJune26.zip which that other guy linked to but it doesn't seem to have done anything and I see his post has been deleted so I'm guessing I don't need it.

I deleted my previous post because Astaroth responded with the same info a few seconds before I did, so my post was unnecessary.

    Download this again:
    http://nexe.gamedev.net/files/D3DXDLLJune26.zip

Unzip it to a folder, and double-click DXSETUP.exe.

    Proceed from there.

If that doesn't work, then you might not have the latest version of DirectX installed:

I did as you said SegNin but it still comes up with the same message, I must be doing something wrong in all honesty but I can't work out what.

What is your graphics card? And do you have DirectX and its drivers installed?

Just so we're clear, you installed the latest version of DirectX?
Then installed that D3DXDLLJune26.zip file I sent you, and you're still getting "Failed to initialise D3D Device"?

Did you remove the d3dx9_26.dll file from the pSX folder?
You don't need it there since that .dll got installed in your System32 folder when you installed the D3DXDLLJune26.zip

What is your graphics card then?

Maybe you need to update the drivers for it.
