well kirk, it depends on what kind of games you wish to play. of course (here i go) if you want good overal games, and a system with a decent library, get the ps2. if you want a kiddie system, get the gamecube. i was gonna mention resident evil 4 but you can get that for the ps2 now lol and if you want a system that better with online features, get the xbox.

A Dreamcast should of been mentioned and alot of Dreamcasts play backups without a modchip aswell (For the US it depends when it was made in europe they all play backups) [Dreamcasts are no longer produced though but you can pick one up 2nd hand for very small amount of cash]
The Dreamcast has a few nice RPG's most of them are rehashed on PS2 and GameCube now aswell, infact alot of the games in general from the Dreamcast can be found on GameCube & PS2 maybe even the brick
there are great RPG's out on both PS2 and GameCube, I don't know enough about the bricks game list though to comment
Both the Dreamcast and the Brick have an impressive collection of emulators to be run on there systems aswell (the brick needs to be mod chips for those)
