Default Conflict between WinXP Pro and ePSXe

Even though the program that's in conflict is ePSXe, I'm positive the problem actually has to do with something wrong with WinXP.
So, please leave this in Computer Tech for now.

Went to play Pepsiman and after the opening FMV, when I pressed Start ePSXe crashed and XP restarted.
Tried messing with the plugins/settings, still crashed and restarted every time I pressed Start.

So, I tested a few other emulators, and they played it fine, which eliminated the ISO as the source of the problem. Also eliminated the plugins as the source, since those other emulators use the same plugins & settings.

Which narrows it down to either the ePSXe executable itself or something with WinXP.

Since this is the same executable that I had on my Win98SE box, that I transferred over to my new comp, and it never crashed when I played PepsiMan, I believe that can only mean there's something up with XP or some program that's installed.

At least I figured out how to get WinXP to stop auto-restarting after it crashes (My Computer > Properties > Advanced > Startup and Recovery > Settings > uncheck Automatically restart)

So, now when it crashes I'm getting a BSOD that says this at the end:
    0x000000F4 (0x00000003 0x890296E8 0x8902985C 0x805D11F8)

Don't suppose anybody here can interpret that gobbledygook?

yeah, I know it's a long shot, but I've got a bad feeling this is going to happen with other games, and ePSXe is still my favorite PSX emu, though I'm starting to dig pSXfin quite a bit.

    Please list your hardware.
Start->Run. Type "dxdiag" and press enter.
In the window that comes up at the bottom right press "Save all information".

Attach the text file with your next post.

    800x600... ewww
Anyway, hopefully you're not on dialup as I see you have a 56k modem in there.

Download and install the latest Nvidia drivers for your video card.

    DO NOT RESTART YET

Download and install the latest Realtek HD Audio drivers for your soundcard.

If at any moment your computer restarts and does not want to get back in Windows do not panic, before the Windows loading logo appear press F8 and choose "Last known good configuration". However, this shouldn't happen.

    I SOLVED IT!!

This comp came with Vista, but I installed XP over it, and with the help of HP tech support found all the XP drivers I needed.

The last driver, which I found on my own, was for my Ethernet card.
When I installed it, I noticed an icon in the Systray:
Local Area Connection 2: A network cable is unplugged.

The tech support lady told me to leave it alone, that it wouldn't cause any trouble, and she showed me how to hide it so it wouldn't show in my tray.

Well, of course, that's what was causing ePSXe to crash.

Took me awhile to find where I could disable it since I'm new to XP, and couldn't remember what that icon was about either.

But I finally found it: Start > Control Panel > Network and Internet Connections > Network Connections > Local Area Connection 2 > right-click > Disable.

I don't need it enabled because I'm already connected to the Internet via Local Area Connection 1.

    So, ePSXe's no longer crashing.

    Conflict found and problem solved.

Thanks for trying to help polobunny and maca.

    edit--
    must spread more rep before...pfft.
maybe next time polo...if it'll let me.

    edit2--
    I prefer 800 x 600, with 1024 x 768 the icons look too small--everything does.
My monitor is rather old, a crt, and I think it's only 15"

    edit3--
    nope, 14"

O_o wtf? How could that possibly have anything to do with it?
I had the same icon the entire time I was on dial up, and I hid it by disabling the slot. Now with DSL the modem's connected to my computer through an ethernet cable so that slot's active. The disconnected icon only appears when my modem's off.
As I was walking down the stair,
    I met a man who wasn't there.
    He wasn't there again today.
    I wish, I wish he'd go away.

You ever play Final Doom or Pepsiman on ePSXe?

Because I tried other games and those were the only 2 that crashed.

I dunno why it was the cause of the problem, but after disabling that unused and unneeded network connection, Pepsiman plays fine, and Final Doom no longer crashes, it just freezes.

But that's normal--I need to mess with the settings to get it to stop freezing.

Nope. ; But I never had any problems with anything else in epsxe. Since my port is still in the same condition as yours, just used, I could always download Final Doom (I used to have that game for real. I <3'd it ), turn off my modem, and experiment. Not a big fan of BSOD's, though.

Yeah, an all integrated HP but still much better then what you had. Go pickup a nice LCD monitor now.

Well...turns out I'd only partially solved the problem.

Because when I first tested ePSXe, I used Run ISO, and there was no BSOD.

But Final Doom won't work through Run ISO, because the CDDA tracks need to be loaded too, or the game freezes on the Loading screen.

So, either you burn to CD, or you mount to a virtual drive, or you use that CD plugin that works just like a virtual drive so that you can play Final Doom.

Of course, when I tried to play Final Doom through Daemon Tools, as soon as the Loading screen came up, BAM!

    A different BSOD.

At least with this BSOD I knew what was wrong.
Because Pepsiman & Final Doom have one thing in common: they both have CDDA tracks.

The other games I'd tried didn't have CDDA and there was no BSOD with them when I played them through Daemon Tools.

So, in the end I uninstalled Daemon 3.47, tried installing Daemon 3.29 (the one recommended for ChanKast) but got a 3rd kind of BSOD during the installation, so finally I said fuck it and installed the newest Daemon Tools (minus the adware), and at long last...:

    So, yeah...how was your day?
