The K-Lite Mega Audio Pack. Includes all the codecs a normal everyday person would need... and on top of that, it includes Classic Media Player, a free little player along the looks of the original WMP (you know, the little box version?). The codecs include Realplayer and Quicktime Alternatives, so if you hate those players like I do (especially Real... ooh I hates them...), CMP will be able to play them all flawlessly. Enjoy!

I just noticed that polo put CMP in his list, but this package offers a little extra, all for free!

Forgot the link... Here you go!

Totem is a decent linux video/media player which my friend who uses linux full time reccomends.
Totem seems to integrate pretty nicely with gnome if you use that environment.

Eh, my experiences of Totem: I enabled 5.1 sounds (is supported by hardware) and my whole computer freezed. Yeah, I know the stability of Linux, but if one player can't even enable 6-channel sounds without crashing the whole system... yeah.

And for me liking MPlayer, here is the link for full codec pack for Windows version of it:
http://www1.mplayerhq.hu/MPlayer/rel...l-20050412.zip in case you have some very strangely coded video that the normal install can't play it, after applying this pack (12 MB) even the most unknown coded videos should work
Have you seen me before?

Wrong link description it doesn't have the player with it, only the codecs.

Hey, I didn't know MPlayer was a Hungarian program. Funny.
This still doesn't mean that I'll be using this instead of Media Player Classic. Not right now, actually. Some movies got played back a little weird, so I'm guessing MPC isn't teh perfection either.

For Windows, VLC is my fave proggy http://www.videolan.org/

It can play just about any file you throw at it without needing any codecs. It also plays all DVDs from anywhere in the world, even if you have a region-locked DVD drive. Finally, its coolest feature is that you can use it to run a network radio or TV station. Imagine, we could use this to set up a radio station for all those soundtracks we have lying around.

i noticed that this has already been put up. i guess you should just count this as a reccomendation.

Very useful thread...

Nothing new that I can contribute... but I'll say that Media Player Classic and BSPlayer kick ass. I use BSPlayer all the time, I highly reccomend that to anyone(anything beats WMP). Just get the "pancake" skin, which is very simple and nice, since the skins it comes with by default are too big and simply suck. It's very stable, has tons of features, and is very easy to configure. MPC is also nice, I just don't use it as often.

Edit: Gah, I must spread more rep before giving it to polobunny again... good thing I'm not an asshat, I won't randomly ruin someone's rep to be able to add to someone else's*cough*Skinner*cough*.
