how can I check if an external hdd that's formatted to NTFS has an MBR partition and not GPT?
I was looking through amazon yesterday for android boxes or digital media players to possibly replace my pos when I seen a mention on one of the digital media players I looked at saying that external hdds 1tb or over needed to have be NTFS and MBR partitioned and not GPT partitioned.
I got to thinking maybe that's why my media player won't properly detect my external(even when it powered externally). I just assumed the drive was MBR and not GPT I knew it was NTFS as that was the default.

If you're using Windows, you can check in disk management.

thanks. had to use the command prompt as disk management wasn't showing me the partition type, at least now I know that it's gpt now I get to backup around 600gb so I can format it to mbr there goes the next several days.

Uhh, my computer just had a forreal blue screen of death. Coincidentally like a week ago my brother raided my PC for 2x8GB sticks of ram, and dropped 4x4GB sticks on me. They passed a memory test, but the BSoD is far from the only PC hiccup since, so I'm guessing there's some problem the memory test didn't catch. Luckily memory prices have dropped a ton since I looked a year or 2 ago, so I just grabbed another 2x8GB for only $45 bucks. Would've cost $80-90 a couple months ago

Strange. Are you using Windows 10. Did you click on the far left were it says which disk?

    Spoiler warning:

There is red scribble on the part to click, then click properties, you should see a volumes tab.

I suggest you check compatibility after reformatting before loading the disk up with files.

so I spent all day moving files off one hdd to another and now I have my drive converted to mbr. I'll check it tomorrow with my media player(I'm currently using it and don't feel like shutting it off today)
so now I think I'll play a game

Windows 8.1?! I mean I guess its not terrible. You can probably upgrade to 10 for free. Its not as bad as it used to be. Would have been nice if MS just kept upgrading Windows 7, but of course they won't/wouldn't.

I thought 8.1 was alright when I tried it briefly. Better than "you're the QA tester and you'll like it" W10+.

after getting my external hdd partition set to mbr and setting it up I added a couple of empty folders to test it(and for organizing). I connected it to my media player with success
now I'm currently transferring all my files back.
