Default Gare plays Tales of Destiny: Director's Cut (PS2 remake)*

UPDATE: Yes, as you might've guessed, this project is dropped indefinitely. Mostly because I'm not entirely sure how fun this is for viewers who don't know any Japanese. Probably not fun at all. I mean, you'd have to read a whole bunch of text and watch a video at the same time. And making video annotations is still too much of a pain in the ass. Bottom line, following this LP would probably be tedious as fuck for most of you, so I've decided not to continue with it for the time being.

So, this might very well be a project I'll never finish, but I'm not the sort of person who'd lose sleep over an unfinished LP project on the internet, so yeah. Why the hell not.

As I explain in the first video, this is pretty much a full remake of Tales of Destiny on the PSX. Graphics, battle system, overall gameplay, pretty much everything is improved and re-designed. There's also full voice acting. I consider it one of the best Tales games ever, and it's also among my all-time favourite JRPGs. Since the game was never released outside Japan, I'll be posting the important dialogue bits in text format, using the script translation site found here. All credit goes to the actual translators, obviously. I'm just doing this for fun and out of love for the game, so no hard feelings, okay?

I know, the ideal format would be to post subtitles as annotations, but that is time-consuming as fuck. So how about no.

The main format of the LP will be some text + screenshots and the occasional video of the more important bits. Each video will be accompanied by a translation of the relevant parts of the story/script (in spoiler tags), so you understand what's going on, although I do try to comment on/translate some things. I won't record myself grinding through a dungeon and solving its puzzles - that'll be a few screenshots and text. What I'll record is the cutscenes, bossfights, some battles and some exploration as well, when we arrive at a town for the first time. Since this is the introduction of the game, I ended up recording a bit more footage than I had originally intended. Which means there won't be any screenshots... yet.

    Alright, let's begin!

    ...in the next post!

The Talking Sword / Mountain Hut

    Okay. Let the adventure begin.

    OPENING TIME!

    Spoiler warning:

    Stan: Cut it out...stop...

Stan: Please stop it...Why are you doing this to me?

Captain: The secrecy of this operation must be maintained. Don't think badly of us.

Stan: But I only wanted to go to Seinegald!

    Stan: No way, please wait!

Captain: If we hadn't been carrying that, perhaps things might have been different for you, but...

Soldier: Hey, who the hell threw that!?

Soldier: You little punk...! So you brought a few friends along too, huh?

Stan: I...I don't know anything about that.

    Captain: What was that!?

Crewman: A huge swarm of monsters is approaching from ahead! There's too many of them!

Captain: Ridiculous! Monsters raiding a Flying Dragon is...

    Crewman: Your orders, sir!

Captain: All crew, engage battle plan level one! We can't let them get inside the ship!

    Crewman: Yes sir!

    Stan: Now's my chance...

    Stan: Aah!

Stan: At this rate I won't last long...There's gotta be a weapon somewhere around here.

Let us acquire our friendly neighbourhood talking sword, Dymlos. We also meet up with future playable characters Mary and Rutee, and finally escape from the ship.

    Spoiler warning:

    Stan: Damn!

    Stan: Grandpa...Lilith...

Stan: No...! I don't want to die in a place like this!

    ?????: You over there!

    Stan: Huh?

?????: Oh? It appears that you can hear my voice. Then perhaps you have some merit.

    Stan: Who's there?

?????: Do you want to know? Then come further inside.

    Stan: Inside...?

    Stan: Something's shining...over there?

    Stan: There's no one here...

    Stan: This is...a sword?

Stan: But it's kind of a weird shape...I wonder if it's usable?

Stan: Tch! It's not the time to be worrying about something like that!

Stan: So long as it's a weapon, I won't lose to creeps like you!

    (After Battle)

Stan: What's with this sword? It feels strangely natural in my hand...

Stan: Is this...ship gonna be okay?

Stan: I wonder what's going on outside?

    (Exit the Room)

    Stan: Damn, again?

    Stan: You're...?

    Stan: ...!

    Stan: A woman...?

?????: Hey! Why do you have it?

    Stan: Huh? 'It'?

?????: That sword! Hand it over! It's not yours to take!

?????: Oh enough already! Why do they just keep coming and coming!?

?????: Don't tell me they're after the sword too!

Stan: It seems like there's no end to them.

    ???: Rutee!

???: The crew has been annihilated. At this rate, the ship is going to crash.

    Stan: Annihilated!?

???: Let's make our escape quickly!

Rutee: Ah, w...wait a minute! We still haven't gotten the sword we came for!

    ???: There's no time!

Stan: This is bad...! I've got to get out of here quickly as well.

    (Check Any of the Bodies)

    There's no response.

    (Return to the Deck)

Stan: Got it; I can use one of those.

Time to blow up a lake. LIKE A BOSS.

    Spoiler warning:
    ???: Wake up, Big Brother!

    Stan: Uuh...

???: Hey, I said wake up!

    Stan: Ahh...Lilith.

Lilith: Hey, don't just mumble 'Lilith' like that. Tsk. I wish you'd put yourself in my shoes for once. Having to wake you like this...

    Stan: Ah, I'm so relieved...

Lilith: What's wrong? Did you have a really bad dream, or something?

Stan: It wasn't just bad, it was the worst. I was drowning, and I thought I was gonna die.

Stan: And I kept hearing this weird voice.

    Dimlos: Wake up, Stan.

    Stan: Yeah, yeah, that voice...huh?

    Stan: Uwaa!?

Dimlos: How long do you intend on sleeping? Hurry up and open your eyes!

    Stan: Huh?

    Stan: Where is this...?

Stan: That's right! I definitely escaped from the dragon ship, and...

Stan: It looks like I ended up taking this sword with me. Now that I look at it closely, it's really a piece of junk.

Dimlos: 'Junk'? That's a new one.

    Stan: Ah!

Dimlos: Hey, you don't need to make such a big fuss over nothing.

    Stan: The sword! It spoke!

Dimlos: I'm alive, so it's not that strange.

Stan: But normal swords aren't even supposed to be alive!

Dimlos: Don't get so worked up. I'm a Swordian.

    Stan: Swor...dian...?

Dimlos: Swords created more than a thousand years ago that hold a sentient personality. Swords like myself.

    Stan: Ehh...

Dimlos: Do you understand? Then please hurry and pick me up. Or do you intend to leave me on the floor forever?

    Stan: A-alright.

Dimlos: Tsk...it seems like you're more than a little bit scatterbrained.

Dimlos: You're my master now, so I'd appreciate it if you made an effort to be a bit more together.

    Stan: 'Master'?

Dimlos: Didn't the two of us make a contract together?

Dimlos: You don't remember what happened in the lake?

    Stan: ...Ah!

Stan: The one who was talking to me this whole time was you?

    Stan: So your name is...Dimlos.

Dimlos: Correct. That is my name.

Dimlos: Back then, when you called out my name, a contract was formed between the two of us.

Dimlos: Now you are my master, a Swordian Master.

    Stan: Swordian...Master...

????: Looks like you woke up.

    Stan: You are?

    Woodrow: My name is Woodrow.

Woodrow: It looks like you're okay.

Woodrow: When I found you passed out in the lake, I wondered what could possibly have happened.

Stan: You carried me all the way here, didn't you?

Stan: I am Stan Aileron. Thank you for saving me.

    Stan: But...um...Where am I?

Woodrow: We're in the mountains of Phandaria. You don't know this region?

Stan: I rode a dragon ship, but ended up getting off midway, so...

Woodrow: I see, a Flying Dragon. And you found that sword there.

Stan: So you know about this sword? It talks, you know!

Dimlos: Stan! You shouldn't just talk to people about me carelessly like that!

Stan: What do you mean? It doesn't really matter, does it?

Dimlos: The only one capable of hearing me is a Swordian Master.

Dimlos: If you speak to me in the vicinity of humans who can't hear me, they'll just think you're deluded.

    Stan: Eh? I...is that right...?

    Woodrow: What's wrong?

    Stan: ...Ah. No...it's...nothing.

???: Chelsea! Hey! ...Oh. She must have gone wandering in the hills again.

    ???: Oi kid. You're awake.

Woodrow: This is my archery instructor, Alba-sensei. He's also the one who owns this cabin.

Stan: Ah, hello. Thank you for your hospitality.

Alba: No, no. In a crisis, everyone has to pull together.

    Woodrow: Chelsea is Sensei's granddaughter.

Woodrow: Sensei...shall I go and look for her?

Alba: Oh, that would be helpful.

Stan: I'll go too; it's the least I can do.

    Woodrow: Alright, lets go together.

    Stan: Right!

Alba: I'll leave it to both of you.

    =Notice=

    Woodrow joins the party.

    (Talk to Alba)

Alba: Chelsea is probably in the hills again. I'll leave it to you.

    (Outside)

    SKIT

    Stan: Uwaa! It's snowing.

Woodrow: Is snow really all that unusual for you?

Woodrow: Where did you come from, Stan-kun?

Stan: A village called Leane in Fitzgald.

Woodrow: I see. I've heard that the climate there is warm.

Woodrow: I guess it hardly snows there, so it must be a rare sight for you.

    Stan: That's right.

    =Notice=

Woodrow: Don't let your guard down; there are many ferocious monsters around here.

Stan: I'm pretty confident with a sword. Leave it to me!

Dimlos: Don't get too stuck up just because you're my master.

Stan: You've got a pretty big ego for a sword.

Dimlos: Before we run into any real danger, I'll tell you the ins and outs of Swordian usage.

Stan: I already know stuff like that. It's just slicing and dicing, right?

Dimlos: If it were a normal sword, that'd be all. But a Swordian is different.

Dimlos: Firstly, I have to teach you about our elemental powers. In my case, I'm tied to the element of fire.

    =Notice=

    Stan has learned Fireball.

Dimlos: Magic requires time to charge, but has many more capabilities than simple sword technique.

Dimlos: Next, the capabilities of a Swordian can be changed via a Swordian Device.

Dimlos: Let's quickly take a look at how to use this.

    Spoiler warning:
Dimlos: Between elemental attacks and a Swordian Device, a Swordian like me has command of a broad range of capabilities.

Dimlos: You ought to test them all.

    Stan: Got it.

Dimlos: At the moment, you're still too weak. You need to become aware of this, and work diligently in order to improve.

    Stan: You're a real nag, aren't you.

    Woodrow: Haha...

Woodrow: No, it's nothing. I just thought that you looked like you were having fun. Are you ready?

    Stan: Ah yeah, let's go.

Next time, we explore the snowy mountains and meet up with Chelsea, the resident archer/underage girl.

    The Stray Child, Chelsea

As promised, it's time to explore the snowy mountains, watch a few silly skits and meet up with Chelsea. We also murder cute woodland creatures.

    Into the mountains!

After we're done murdering bunnies, it's time to get introduced to Chelsea, the #1 Woodrow fangirl in the entire world. We eventually take her back to Alba's cabin, where some more scenes will occur.

    Spoiler warning:
    Stan: Ah, someone's here.

    ???: *Sniff*...I'm finished...

???: I definitely won't make it back home...

    Woodrow: Chelsea.

    Chelsea: Woodrow-sama!

Chelsea: To have come all this way to meet me. I'm completely elated!

    Stan: 'Elated'?

Dimlos: She's saying that she's really happy.

    Stan: Oh...

Woodrow: Looking at the situation here, it seems as if you got lost again.

    Chelsea: Whaddaya mean by 'again'?

Chelsea: It's not like I've ever gotten lost before!

Stan: But to have been crying that much...

    Chelsea: Th-that was...

Chelsea: I was just talking with Mr. Zelkova Tree. And his tears spread to me before I knew it.

Stan: Eh...you can talk with trees? That's awesome!

    Chelsea: Eh...eh...well.

Chelsea: Um...excuse me, but who might you be?

Stan: Ah, I'm Stan Aileron. Nice to meet you.

Woodrow: Somehow or other, he ended up coming to Sensei's for help.

Chelsea: I'm Chelsea, the granddaughter of Alba the archery master. Though I am but a keihai, I hope that we can be friends.

    Stan: K...'keihai'?

Dimlos: One of low social standing. It can also mean one who is not yet mature.

Stan: You really do know about a lot of things, Dimlos.

    Chelsea: Di...di...dimu...?

    Stan: Ah, no, it's nothing.

Woodrow: Chelsea, Sensei is looking for you. Lets go back together.

    Chelsea: Okay, understood!

    =Notice=

    Chelsea joins the party.

    Back at the cabin:

Alba: Ah Chelsea, I've been waiting for you.

Alba: The cord in my trousers has snapped. Could you please hurry and mend them for me?

Chelsea: Tsk, that's the reason you called me!?

Chelsea: If it's something as small as the cord in your trousers, fix it yourself!

Alba: Can't you do it? It's not like it's anything very big.

    Chelsea: That's besides the point!

Woodrow: So this is family love, huh.

Stan: My house is just the same. I live with my grandfather and little sister.

Stan: How about your family, Woodrow-san?

Woodrow: About the only person I could call family is my father. But we don't have the opportunity to see each other much.

Woodrow: Anyway, we shouldn't just stand around outside like this talking. Lets go inside.

    =Notice-

    Chelsea left the party.

SKIT (Lets hurry and go inside the house)

    Stan: Lets go inside.

    (Inside)

Alba: Anyway, kid, what are you going to do now?

Stan: I was thinking I might head to Darilsheid, the capital of Seinegald.

Woodrow: Why do you want to go to Darilsheild?

Stan: I want to become a soldier in Seinegald's army.

    Woodrow: A soldier?

Stan: My grandfather was a soldier too, long ago.

Stan: I heard stories from him from when I was very young, and one day began to think 'I'd like to do that too'.

Dimlos: It's not something that's easy to achieve with such half-hearted thoughts.

Stan: How do you know unless you try?

Alba: Who are you talking to?

    Stan: Uhh...

    Woodrow: Hahaha...

Woodrow: Ah, well I hope that your time as a soldier goes well.

    Stan: Thank you!

    Dimlos: ......

Woodrow: If you are going to Seinegald you'll need to go by way of Janos.

Chelsea: Janos is on the border between Phandaria and Seinegald.

Chelsea: From here, it lies to the southwest.

Woodrow: Shall I accompany you? I was just thinking of returning to my home country anyway.

Chelsea: Eeh? You're already leaving, Woodrow-sama?

Woodrow: I received a letter telling me that I've been called back, so I don't really have a choice.

Woodrow: I really would have liked to receive a little more instruction from Sensei, but...

Alba: You should stop wasting time around here.

Alba: Make your preparations, and hurry to see your father.

Woodrow: Tsk...That's not your concern, Sensei.

Woodrow: At any rate, when you're ready lets leave, Stan-kun.

    Stan: Right!

Woodrow: Chelsea, please listen carefully to what Sensei says.

Chelsea: Woodrow-sama, please come back soon.

Chelsea: I'll be awaiting your return with bated breath.

    Stan: 'Bated'...?

Dimlos: I'm not a dictionary, you know...It means she's looking forward to him coming back.

Alba: Stay in good spirits, kid.

Stan: Both of you as well. I won't forget your kindness!

    SKIT (Lets head outside now)

    Stan: Lets head outside now.

    SKIT (What kind of job?)

Stan: So, Woodrow-san. What does your father do for a living?

Woodrow: Hmn...you could say that he overlooks a lot of people.

Stan: I see. So he's something like a coach?

Woodrow: Haha...that's the first time anyone's ever called him that.

Woodrow: However, it might just be right on the mark.

    (Outside)

Stan: Is Janos far? It'd be good if I didn't get hungry halfway there, but...

Woodrow: I'll give this to you, Stan-kun. A food sack.

    =Notice=

    Got the Food Sack.

    Got the Rice Balls recipe.

Woodrow: With this, you'll be able to heal yourself after a battle.

Woodrow: You can replenish your food supply in towns, so it's something that you can use repeatedly.

Stan: Ehh, that's pretty convenient. Thanks!

Woodrow: Anyway, shall we go? Janos is to the southwest.

Onwards to Janos. More snowy mountains! Behold:

We stop to chat with Woodrow a bit just before arriving at the town. Once that's done, and the game's explained the use of Lens to us with the sudden appearance of a merchant, we can finally reach our destination. After which Woodrow hastily takes his leave.

    Spoiler warning:

    (Midway)

Woodrow: Is walking through snow a little bit tiring for you?

Stan: I'm still okay. It's actually pretty interesting and fun.

    Stan: Ehh, Woodrow-san...

Stan: You might get mad at me for asking this, but...

Stan: Do you dislike the idea of following in your father's footsteps?

Stan: When Alba-sensei mentioned your father, you seemed to get a little bit upset for a moment.

Stan: I thought maybe you might be worried about something. Sorry if I'm wrong.

Woodrow: So you found me out.

Woodrow: It seems like you're pretty good at seeing people for what they are.

Woodrow: It's not that I dislike it, but it's problematic. I'm not sure how qualified I am to follow him.

Woodrow: It's a little bit odd for me, his son, to say this, but my father is really quite a wonderful person.

Woodrow: And I think that, the way I am now, I'm in no way capable of living up to that.

Stan: But isn't it a good thing to have such a wonderful person to look to for inspiration?

Stan: I never knew my father, so I'm pretty jealous of you.

Woodrow: ...I see. I suppose that's one way of thinking about it.

Stan: Sorry if I said too much.

Woodrow: No, thank you for offering your opinion on things. I'll think about it.

Woodrow: Janos is just a little further. Lets continue.

    (Outside Janos.)

    Salesman: Hey, you guys!

Salesman: Do you have Lens? I'll gladly buy them.

Woodrow: Lens? That's right. Shall we trade?

    Salesman: Alright, let's do business.

Salesman: Ok, with today's rate...Okay, I'll take these ones. Thanks!

Stan: Ohh? You can get Gald from Lens?

Woodrow: Yes. So much so that there are those that call themselves Lens Hunters, and make it their job to gather Lens.

Stan: Maybe I should try selling mine too.

    Salesman: Oh really?

    *****

    At Janos

Woodrow: This is the town of Janos.

Woodrow: You should ask the townspeople how to get to Seinegald.

Woodrow: I must return to Phandaria, so this is the end of our travels together.

    Stan: Thanks for everything.

    Woodrow: Then stay well.

Woodrow: Stan-kun, that sword, be sure to treasure it.

Woodrow: I'm sure your fate will change as long as you have it.

    Stahn: O-okay.

    Woodrow: (err....)

    Stan: I understand.

    Dimlos: Hey, you, Woodrow!

Stan: Hey, don't be rude to him!

Dimlos: If he can hear me, good! If not, it doesn’t matter.

Dimlos: Well can you hear me or not?

    Woodrow: Lets meet again.

Dimlos: Is it just my imagination? Still, it seems that he can sense my presence.

    Stan: Does it worry you?

Dimlos: Well, at any rate, that man is not normal.

Stan: He's still a good man.

    Stan: Well, lets get going.

    =Notice=

    Woodrow left the party.
