I suspect that Xbox that died on me was a psu failure but I'll never know for sure. It wasn't hot or anything like that, wasn't sluggish before it stopped working...it just instantly lost power and wouldn't turn on again.

Yeah that was my thought too when you said it. I know they had some issues with that early on and redesigned the power cable to act as a circuit breaker. Other than that and some faulty DVD drives in the first few production runs I think they were quite solidly built.
One thing I have noticed with PS4 is the odd app crash to xmb. And no, it isn't Fallout 4 that does it with the pile of mods I'm running atm (though I have seen it a couple of times with that early on way before mods 'cos I got the game pretty much day 1 and played without patches).
It's other random games that have done it quite unexpectedly...Dying Light, Rise of the Tomb Raider...even Uncharted 4 iirc.
Spoiler warning:
That being said, I much prefer a PS4 app crash than the bs game freezes/console lockups on PS3.
Spoiler warning:
Rise of the Tomb Raider is really wtf though. I mean you'd think after all this time they would've sorted out any issues before the PS4 release.
Spoiler warning:
I don't think I've experienced any crashes with my PS4. It does however constantly sound like it's about to burst into flames, so I've probably got that to look forward to down the line...

PS4 app crashes aren't like traditional console crashes. PS4 just brings up an app crash message, you ignore it and go back to xmb. Then relaunch the game.
It's quite simple and not crazy annoying stuff like PS3 where the console and controller become completely unresponsive.

yeah, seconded!
what a bunch of shit, wiis overheating.
true, the console isn't nintendo's sterling moment, but they sure as shit had child safety in mind.
i'd go as far as to say, the wii runs much cooler than a playstation.
...and 120usd for a gfx card, when others pointed out the irony of it.
...
if a wii has overheated, never heard about it.
yeah, a gaming computer for emulation?
makes sense.
here's me thinking the expensive hardware was for high-end computer games and cpu intensive tasks, as well as emulation.
common sense dictates a cost effective and efficient route.
...
oh, a powerful rig for emulating is extremely energy dependent vs original hardware, uses much more electricity that a console would for the same output.
[edit]
or wiis freeze.
gotta seriously bang and mistreat them for that, really be nasty.
on a scary note, next week, getting a tooth removed. (front lower)
the strange thing is, it's fine, no surface damage, still a solid lump.
busted the root stem by chomping down hard on pork rinds.
there's no repairing that kind of rupture.
and screw a falsie, i'll survive.
just need the thing out, swill the cavity and stitch it up.
can't be arsed with any under rot setting in, damn thing wobbles like fuck...
