But it's nice to have something where you can double click a browser shortcut and have it launch instantaneously instead of having to wait through 20-30 seconds of harddisk grinding and hourglass icons.

It's not that bad, far from it. It runs really smoothly. Not fast like yours, that's for sure, but it's well-tuned for an artifact.

I wish I could say the same about our old machine. ;.; Though to be fair it was bogged down 90% of the time by spyware and viruses. My dad's email contacts are...not always the most careful people.

I got System Shock 1 to run in VDMS (Using this: http://vogons.zetafleet.com/showthread.php?threadid=726)
But when I set it to 640x480 the mouse movement speed drops to a snail's pace. Annoying. Everything else works fine, though.
