There has to be a standard for the internet to run on. Those standards have to come from somewhere. Not all of them are from ICANN: The WWW Consortium makes a lot of the decisions on how the internet code will evolve, for example.

Silly Elton. I guess he really has gotten old. This is his "in my day" rant it seems.
He's angry he had to travel around, whore himself out(metaphorically and perhaps not so metaphorically), and otherwise do a lot of stuff that is no longer required.

If you want to think of a medium that has suffered with the introduction of the internet, it's comedy. You don't have to go to comedy clubs to steal material any more.
