    Liers in Wait released a damn solid EP back in 92, worth checking out as one of the few technical melodeath bands. Unanimated did some good stuff as well. Not much else comes to mind apart from the big names though. At least back then melodeath didn't mean metalcore with borrowed Slaughter of the Soul harmonies.

    It's still all trumped by the Sunshine Studios sound.

    Sunlight Studios you mean? Yeah, the raw buzzsaw guitar tone Entombed had on Wolverine Blues is by far the best I've heard.

    That's what I meant. I blame fatigue.

    But yeah, the rough, thick tone of early swedish DM is one of the truly defining sounds of death metal.
