I don't know about science fiction though....

I think actual ancient mythical creatures are a result of what ppl have seen, some may perhaps be optical illusions or exagerations(ie. sea monster with 8 legs eating ships, maybe octopusses were able to grow bigger than they are today, I think they probably were THAT big), but they're recorded from physical witnesses.

Giant Squid. As for the eating of the ship part, it may have attacked the ship and logged enough water onto the deck that it tipped, thus giving an illusion.

Why is it that everyone who names dryads and gnomes forgets to mention nixies and sylphs?
    Oh yeah, and I'll add
    Minotaurs
    Gorgons
    Lamia
    Sirens
    Golems
Abatwa (A peaceful race of tiny African peoples who live in anthills in Southern Africa, only revealing themselves to children under four years old, wizards or pregnant women. If a pregnant woman sees a male abatwa, she knows she will give birth to a boy.)
Bahamut (Monstrous fish from Moslem traditions. The legend goes that it floats in a vast sea. A giant bull rides on its back and on the bull is a ruby mountain. There is an angel on the mountain over which are six hells, then the Earth, and then seven heavens. The bahamut is so huge and dazzling that human beings cannot look upon it. Its name may have lead to the behemoth.)

    There are lots more here

I can't believe no one has mentioned the Loch ness monster already, now that is a really mythical creature.

    Golems, Unicorns, Centaurs.

On the seventh dawn of the seventh day a twice-blessed man will roam the fields. Doomed to shadows with his brethren, or saviour to all who walk the ground.

    Here's another of my favorites
Baginis - Australian, half animal and half human. Always female. Despite considerable beauty, they have claw-like fingers and toes. They are known to capture men, but seldom kill them, usually letting them go after they rape them.
