Red XIII is the number assigned to him as a test subject, not his real name, so of course it's kinda odd. His real name's Nanaki.
It's funny if you call him Nanaki though, because when you first go to his hometown, they find out his real name, and are like:
"Nanaki, who's Nanaki? OH! Nanaki is Nanaki? NO WAY!"
