    Default Trash Littering!

I hope this subject is a little more explanatory than the other one.
I was thrown out of a bus once for picking up the litter from the bus, b/c the conducter thought I had no ticket so I was trying to flick one off the floor.

I don't know how many of you heard of this, but about a fortnight ago, it rained like hell in this western city called Mumbai in India and it had never rained there as much. And the whole city came to a standstill for over 48 hours. People died in their cars b/c the water level increased so quickly. People lost their houses and their livelihood and much damage was done to fit it in this one little space.

Right, what I'm aiming at, is to inform you, that 40% of the damage that had been done was due to littering on the streets and roads which led to mass drainage blockade.

I was just hoping to get some response on what y'all think of the problem. If at all you view it as a problem and how people could help in stopping this problem.

    Responses will be appreciated

Laws against littering should be enforced. We already have the laws in place. If they were enforced as in certain other western nations, that'd help greatly. It doesn't take long to 'educate' people about littering, one kick in the ass or alternatively a night in jail shall educate them soon enough.

If only it were that easy...
I agree with the law thing, but I'm talking about sensitisation. How do we reach out to a larger much more ignorant (forgive my assumption) audience?

Exactly, leave what you cannot sensitise to the Jail wardmasters. The rest can be taken care of with public service ads in newspapers and on TV channels. For people smart enough, that is usually good enough.

50 on the spot fines were recently introduced in the local city centre recently, and boy did it show. The problem is still there of course, but there's a lot less trash which is nice. Myself, I've only ever littered non-biodegradable products once, I feel like a hippy

I think that children need to know the consequences of littering from an early age. If we make an effort to teach them about recycling while they're still young they're far more likely to respect the environment as they grow older. I can't speak for how they're being taught currently, but outside of the home it certainly wasn't mentioned much when I was young. The majority of parents try to educate their children about this kind of thing, but short of that and a rant from a Sesame Street character on the TV there really isn't a lot to encourage them to dispose of litter properly. I think a large-scale anti-litter campaign targeted towards kids featuring popular characters would be a good idea. Also, this kind of thing really should be taught in schools; perhaps they could have visitors from local recycling facilities or Greenpeace or something in order to explain to children the impact this sort of apathy is having on the world.

Eh, it's a tough problem. It's good that penalties are now being introduced in certain countries, but they're not much use unless the person is actually caught red-handed. :\ I just find it upsetting that this type of thing had to be implemented because so many people couldn't care less about their own planet.

People have to care about the environment in order to overcome their laziness of littering. Even with laws is pretty much impossible to get caught doing, so that isn't much of a deterrent. Education and mindfulness of our environment could probably go a long way.

I've of course never seen littering to that extent, which must be really really sick. But on a smaller extent, nothing like seeing cigarette butts covering certain areas.

Laws about trash should be like in Korea. And even stronger.

I see a lot of litter around here..
The city I live in had a proposal at one time too put lots of trashcans in random areas so as to encourage people to stop littering.
But all the money my city has is currently being blown away on constructing a new city centre.. A brand new downtown would probably increase the amoutn of litter there is around here.

What we need to have is a bunch of random scary cops roaming around the streets yelling at people to pick up their goddamn litter and then lecturing them on the evils of littering for hours on end.
Maybe even going so far as to beat the thought into them! It could be a whole new branch of the RCMP!

Thank you all for replying. I didn't think anyone would reply (MasJ apart, he's just the nicest, makes all my floppy threads seem bearable). Schutzstaffel (ah. the high), the thing is you really have to know the cops here, we need a super legislative authority over and above the cops to kick them when they get out of line.

Official Law in UK: 100 Fine if your cought.
In Reality: The cops dont give a shit
Its just another unenforcable law, since it would take time and money to
prosicute someone for littering and cops have more important things to do.

so the best solution: Employ a special Orginization to clean up, And prosicute
Offenders, Just like the Neat Streets group we have in the UK, only one that
    acturally works.

Yes. But how much of it will work.
Everytime we (students) go out and talk of cleaning, we get answers like, give us food first and then we'll think about the environment. Honestly, we talk education, but there's so much goddamn poverty here, it's not even funny. So I really, personally, feel educating people doesn't really help. Sensitization, may help, but the big fat lardy arsed filthy rich fucktards who go to Howard and Oxford and crap come and litter the streets, then what is the common man going to do?
People have to take ownership of their land, of their air, of their water. And until people do't realize that it belongs to them and chucking something out of your car doesn't make it disappear, I don't know where we can go with it.
