Meh, I can't say I'm too excited about a remake to be honest... in fact, I hope that they don't do one. Yes, FF7 is one of the greatest games of all time, and yes, it would be cool to have a slightly updated version, but Square-Enix really need to move on. The game is... what, eight years old now? I really would prefer it if they concentrated on new projects rather than dragging up the past. The last few FF games, from what I've played of them, really haven't left much of an impression on me. As good as Squaresoft were back in the day, it's unlikely that they'll ever better FF7 and I'd much rather they stopped milking the game for all its worth and instead put their efforts into something new and exciting.

RPG's by their very nature are story-driven games, and all of the surprises and twists that captivated you the first time have nowhere near as much effect on you when you replay one because you already know exactly what happens. I know they'll be adding stuff, but the bulk of the story has to remain the same for it to be FF7. So for these reasons I can't say I'm ecstatic at the prospect of this remake. It works with a game like Doom because it's not story-driven and the original plot was probably scribbled down on a beer mat at the last minute. When Doom 3 came out the game was completely changed, and although it still loosely felt like Doom, it was actually an entirely different game. How are you going to do that with a story driven RPG like FF7? The only real option I can see is to change aspects of the storyline, and at the end of the day all that's going to do piss off the hardcore fans because they won't end up with the game they know and love.

Look guys, don't get me wrong. This isn't a flame. I love FF7 and have a hell of a lot of respect for Square, but let's just think about this. There's no doubt that it'd be awesome to have the game running on newer hardware but I honestly don't see how they can successfully pull off a remake without alienating a sizeable percentage of fans. There's not a terrible lot they can do to justify your average game buyer's cash, because if they change too much it's highly likely they'll ruin a lot of the aspects that made the original game so great. I really think this is a case of letting sleeping dogs lie. :\

I agree with this a lot, but i still wouldnt care as i continue to play this game over and over and to be honest, i dont have a clue why, there is just something about the game that i just cant get enough of. And if a remake WAS done (even though it probably wont) i would still get the game as it would be just like normal except i can stare at something a little smoother than edged and blocky characters. As long as the money doent come out of my pocket, and Square doesnt go broke, its all fine by me.

But really, can you see Square-Enix releasing say Final Fantasy XII the way Fantastic Four or any old sports game is being released right now? No, that's my point entire point. They don't need to release 2-3 different versions of a game simultaneuosly. It'll be a dark day when RPGs start getting released like sports games...
Forgive me, but you don't seem to have much of a point Ragnar. What you have is really faulty logic and heresay. Why they're choosing to release it doesn't matter. It doesn't somehow alter the fact that in the end, FFXI is coming to the 360, nor does it alter its signifigance.

While you might believe that "It'll be a dark day when RPG's start getting released like sports games...", a point that ignores the fact that sports games aren't the only multi-console titles on the market, you have to understand that the Square is a business. If they stand to increase their potential revenue by releasing titles across multiple systems, I don't doubt they'll do it. Especially if FFXI proves to be a hit.

At any rate, I said this earlier:

So rather then argue the matter ad naseum, let's just wait and see what happens, eh?

There are a bunch of those, they won't do any good. They have been around since before Ps2 came out.

Maybe they should just remake Final Fantasy 6. Why? because that would be neat.

Final Fantasy would be a much better remake than FFVII. Except I don't want to see that fucking clown Kefka. It wasn't so bad in FFVI, but what I saw in the cinemas from the PSX version was completely wrong.

    Still doesn't hurt to try.
