This all stems from a tech demo shown at E3 last May. The Demo was the opening movie of FF7 with PS3 graphics. People saw this and thought there was a remake of FF7 coming out when Square-Enix have said it was just a tech demo and have no plans on making a remake of FF7 for the PS3.

As a plus to this rumor, people should realize they're Squre-Enix now. So as far as rumors go it's entirely plausable
*PSA* Wii Redump collector's can now unscrub ISO files. So scrubbed games can now be verified. You can find the program to do this here

I watched the Sony Coverage for Er 2005, he announced they wernt planning on a remake, but he also laughed so we cant tell if they are, or arn't. Like others have said, "lets hope" lol.

The closest thing to a FFVII remake now is the anime Last Order. It's an OVA that will ship with the limited edition of FF:AC, and will contain the flashback scenes. Let me dig up a few pictures.

Actually, They are making a remake of FFVII. They're just being "quiet" about it.

As for the E3 demo, just google for it.
The reason there hasnt been an official announcement about the FFVII for PS3 is because they're not sure how long it will take to make the game. It's not just going to be a simple remake on the PS3, it will be more like an extreme upgrade.
The game itself will have the "COMPLETE" FFVII storyline. So that's everything from the entire "FFVII Compilation" (with the exception of Vincent's game) put into the new PS3 title. That's alot of work for one game and if they reveal it too quick, without knowing how long development will take, it could come back to haunt Square-enix.
It will most likely be released in Late 2007.
