Viewing .mov files from a PSX disc

Not exactly emulation-related, but close enough.

I recently found out that if you stick a PSX disc (at least, all the Final Fantasy VII discs) in a computer and look at the file structure you can see windows folders and various files. There's one folder on FF VII disc 1 entitled "Movies", which has, in addition to a bunch of Notepad files with gibberish text, several Quicktime movies with the .mov extention. I assumed these were the high-quality graphics cutscenes, so I tried to open them. Quicktime, however, would not recognize the file type. Is there a way to view these?

those aren't quicktime files, but they share the same extension (.mov). There are programs availble that will allow you to play movie and XA music files off psx disc like PSMplay and PsxMC. You can download them here http://www.zophar.net/utilities/psxutil.html

btw the mov files probably aren't the movies your thinking of most PSX movies have a .str extension.

Yes it is possible to view them, you'll need PSX Multi Converter.

Technically what it does is scan your cd for movies, images and sounds, and use the included codecs to play them. You can also extract those types to various classical types like wav, bitmap and such.


As an alternative, coded by the same person is PSX Multi Player. This one has no converting function but it can play psx movies/sounds properly.
