Crossover cable would be the best solution. You can make one from a usual twisted pair cable if you have a crimping tool, or you can just buy one for almost nothing.
Connect the crossover cable in each pc ethernet card, and you're done.

I suggest you do this, as it's realtively easy and unexpensive, yet it can be really fast.
You can get a cross cable in any computer shop. Don't take one ultra long if you don't need it too, and don't twist/pull it as it will fuck the wires inside.
Oh, and don't take a shielded one, those are usually used when there is a high voltage thing around, making alot of static electricity.

or if you already have a wireless router or whatever, you could try using that and copying files wirelessly, but you'd have to leave it on for like 3 days straight...

if you want the quickest solution, take out the hd with the data on it, and install it as a slave (dont forget to change the jumpers) on the new machine. then just c&p the files. cheapewr that buying a cable, and faster.

Im am mostly a noob when it comes to working with computer parts and the like, so I dont know if that would be such a good idea huh, although if it were easy enough I could take my chances, or not. Anyway, how much would a crossover cable cost? and how would I configure the transfer (any progs I would need to use or something?)

Oh another thing, my sister wants to know if she can plug in the pc to the tv so that we can watch some stuff on the tv. So I was wondering if my video card has video out, and also how does it work and what kinda cables does it use. But how do I know if my video card has tv out?

For that crossover cable thing: both computers must have ethernet port (integrated or add-on), then the cable is attached to the ports. The easiest way to set up simple network under Windows is to install NetBEUI protocol to both computers. Then you need to share all drives of the old hard disk so that the other computer can access them.

    For that TV thing:
Check if there is a plug on the video card. Normally it is composite (a round yellow) or s-video (a round black). You card may also have both or neither. Then you must check the TV. If it also has composite or s-video, then just a cord with proper connectors is enough to connect. Otherwise you might need something to convert between RCA and s-video type or maybe Scart.

Once you have attached a cable, then it is time to configure your video card to display something on TV. You must first decide how the TV acts. If it just has a copy of what's on the monitor or if it is an extension of desktop. You need to select appropriate options from the display properties (maybe using Advanced button).

More information, like what the video card is, can help giving specific instructions.
    Have you seen me before?

Also you could set up an FTP server using ServU and connect to it on the other computer. Assuming you have a fast connection. No need to open up or connect anything. Of course, it's probably also a bit slower.

If you need speed and reliability, you can try a usb network. this thing is totally new, costs a little money out of your pocket, but it's lightning fast. go to www.tigerdirect.com for this product. Only just heard about it, not sure on reliability, or how it works. Just an idea...

Any of the above suggestions will work...but if your new PC has a Firewire port, you can go and buy a PCI Firewire card for your old PC and transfer the data that way...480 Megabits per second beats the 100 Mb/sec. speed that an ethernet cable will give you. Unless of course you happen to have Gigabit

Actually, I can Ghost my C Drive rather quickly. Additional drives can be easily swapped to a new PC, so Ghosting isn't usually necessary.
