Where did you guys get the assumption that they didn't do research for their character development of Barret. One, it was probably translated a tad differently than they said in the JP version. Two, they obviously did something right with him, because he is a very memorable character to me.

Barrett may have talked slang on the Japanese version, but what you see in the English version was translated in America... Actually, it was adapted...

I'm not sure about everyone else, but every miner I ever knew spoke perfect english and could quote famous plays from memory.

Pay attention to Barret's backstory. It sheds a lot of light on this 'stereotype'.

hmmm. well let's see. he's from a coal mining town that was poor but not ghetto poor. he then watched as his best friend was almost murdered by shinra and got half his arm shot off and replaced with what looks like a small gatling gun. he then has a daughter, leads a tiny group called AVALANCHE which were a big joke almost as much as the liberating group in FF8. sees he can't accomplish anything without cloud. i think that covers some of his history, at least to the point of early on in FF7. so how does that relate to barret being a stereotype character?

I find it humorous how you say 'poor but not ghetto poor.'. It's almost as if being 'ghetto poor' is a prerequisite for using slang terms and profanity. Regardless of the financial situation of Barret's village, the environment he grew up in wasn't all that eloquent. Seemed to be more of a hard-labor village. If I were doing that sort of work I wouldn't take 10 seconds to ask someone nicely to hand me tool X when the mine was about to cave in. No, I'm sure I would ask for it very quickly and with a lot of profanity to show exactly how important it was that I was given that tool quickly.

On another note, I'm not going to sit here and analyze videogames for possible stereotypes because I'm ashamed of my genitals. I shall now step out of this thread and do something productive. Such as masturbate.

the place where barret lived seemed more like a town than an actual village. aren't villages seen as the kind of place where life is alot rougher than where barret lived? somewhat, foresty? me thinks so. as opposed to a town which is looked upon as more industrial? with, say, oh i don't know, BUILDINGS? and actual technology (even a little?).
